Fearful Part 14: one better than 13!

15/6. No tweet.

Now time to think about lightweight heads. The Tecamp Puma is on the GAS list. Then I heard the YouTube clip of the Black Jag with the Rock engaged, and I may have a bigger GAS. First, I need to get my hands on it and do some time with my M6.

Quick picture. Can't type much now, but I'll be back with words soon.

Initial impressions:

It sounds lovely. There are only two nits to pick. One, that the mid-driver generates a bit of hiss when the amp is on but no notes are being played. I hear it most when sitting and playing, since the driver is at ear level. Once standing, the hiss can't be heard. I noticed this on the other fEARfuls I tried, so it may just be the nature of the beast. Also, there is something that sounds like it is buzzing when I play the open A or 5th fret on the E-string. It sounds like it could be comming from the woofer cover. It probably just needs some time to settle in, or there is something in my floor that is sympathetic. These two are noticeable at low volume, playing solo. Once I turn up and play with the stereo at a moderate volume, they aren't noticeable.

Other than that, it sounds great, as expected. Crystal clear, but nothing I'd call sterile. Jamming with the stereo, gives me the impression it will sit awesome in a live mix. It sounds well defined and the bass is easily heard without needing to be cranked up or heavily EQ'd to stand out. Burningskies, I must say the Dingwall does sound good, particularly when I hit the 5th string D (it is sick how good it is). However, the Nash PB 63 still edges it out on an overall rating, IMHO. I just love that bass.

I haven't gone over the build with a fine tooth comb yet, but my initial thoughts are that it all looks good. For shipping, Mike packed it like a pro.

The weight, or lack thereof is amazing. I haven't got it on a scale yet, but it is stupid light. The size is bigger than I thought it would be, despite having seen a 15/6 before and knowing the measurements. I wasn't expecting it to be small, but it gives a big impression. Mike did place the handles low on the side, to help avoid knee-banging when carrying it. Bottom line - I'm a guy with partial paralysis of my left arm, and I got the box from my car, up some stairs, and in my living room, and unpacked it by myself. Kudos.

On the paint. I let Mike select the color. We both wanted a custom color, but I couldn't figure out what I wanted (greens, reds, blues, pinks, purples...). So, I told him to pick and not tell me. He gave me a hint, so I wan't 100% in the dark when I opened it. When I first opened the box, I thought it was a bit orange in bright light (fluorescent office), but it gets nice and deep when the lights are lower (my living room). I think if it was darker, it would be too dark in low light. I never factored ambient lighting into the color choice, so I'm happy I let Mike run with it.

I can't wait to get home and play it again. :hyper:

More to say once it is broken in and played in a full band setting.

That hiss is being generated by your amp, and now you've got a cab that actually reproduces it as opposed to amps with a hole in the mids/upper mids where you don't get that reproduced.

Keep an eye on the buzz/rattle. Because of how much force these 3015LFs have, often they can cause vibrational hardware problems or can loosen the fasteners. Its not something hard to fix, but tracking it down can be!

The color is one that is close to familiar to me, it will look very different in different light settings. :) In most playing situations its a very deep oxblood red, in bright sunlight, it's a vibrant red.

The hiss could very well be the amp. I only have one, so I can't swap heads to test it.

Burning - I'm already keeping an eye on the buzz. As a mountain biker, I'm a nut about bolts and how they settle in when new. This thing is fresh off the boat, so I'm expecting a few break-in issues to show up, and I have much respect for the power of that driver.
