Sanding my 12/6 one final time before primer tomorrow. Started to build the X-over and discover I forgot to order the resistors. Duh! As Homer Simpson would say. Looks like the X-over will wait until Moday night. Should have drivers by next week-end. Can wait to fire this thing up!!!!!!!!

I was just watching the Barrett-Jackson auction today on TV, trying to pick up inspiration for metallic finishes that might work on my latest top box. There was a killer '67 Shelby GT350 on there...:cool:

I have a few friends who shape and paint surfboards, so I'm also considering just having one of them do an airbrush job for me. Painting is most definitely not one of my talents. Anyhow, anything but black for me!

The plastic corners are all Penn Elcom. 1405 and 1567. The 1567's are very nice on smaller cabs. Both fit 1/4-3/8 radius nicely on 1/2 ply. The 1405 does require a tad bit of trimming if you don't want any overhang, I've never found it necessary on the 1567.

The metal corner for 1/2 ply is Penn 1824 in chrome and black. After much searching it's the only one I've found that works for 1/2. It overhangs about a 1/16.

good question ;)
i pulled the box apart to make sure polarity was good, did a battery test (the driver cone jumps and bleeps rather loud), so this may be a case of my fretless basses not triggering the thing until the box is at a fairly tall volume. still, i get quite a bit of definition out of that 3015LF as it is. maybe you guys with fretted basses give the 18sound a bit more to work with. i use onboard pres with filters, so again i could be cutting what would be the mids meat and potatoes. my driver did have one of the leads to the cone glued/stuck in the center of it's length to the cone itself (they have some yellow plastic like stuff glurped all over them. i haven't seen this before)

The pine ply I use must be a tad thinner than the BB you use.
Didn't mean to imply that I trim a lot off your small corners...probably less than 1/16".

"Big detail" is quite the understatement Bill. As I ease back into guitar as my main thing I guess that forum is gonna get a bookmark...;)

I'm looking at a metallic 'burst, or maybe a fishscale motif, or even both. Just got in some really cool metallic paint samples from this place, which I found while looking for some universal colorant for my white Duratex.

Thanks for adding to the 'details' for the fEarful hardware. I've never seen the part numbers or manufacture of the corners listed...we usually talk about them in terms of 'big/small/etc". :)

Hey all,

currently doing some planning to build one of these but I can't find a good option for the speaker grill. I was wondering if anyone had tried making their own, it looks like you can get perforated metal sheets that looks similar to speaker grills from metworking places, would just need to paint and bend the corners etc. Anyone tried this before?

Either that or does anyone know a good place to get speaker grills in Canada, I can find almost everything else I need without shipping from the US but the only grills I can find are the round ones that only cover the speaker which I don't particularly like the look of.

Hey jbaird,

I've purchased diamond extruded flats at a welding shop before, and used a cutting wheel on a hand grinder to cut along a clamped-down straight 1 x 4. Then I smoothed sharp edges with the same cutting wheel's face using very gentle pressure. My Headcase grill was done this way, as well as other cab grills.

I think a high gloss sparkle finish large cab would be pretty ridiculous.

The TDPRI is the ONE guitar forum that can match TB in any way. Great guys there and a good feel with good info. I've actually been a member longer than here.

You may know that I like any people who are obsessive about any kind of genre/detail/subject. Enthusiasm meets eye for detail and collector completism is pretty cool.

For those who'd like a customizable look that gets closer to cloth but still with the protective quality found in metal, I'd recommend the second grill down on [Invalid or Expired Link Removed].

Seen in person, it's a much finer hole pattern and all without losing the free air passage. From a few feet back it looks an awful lot like a good black fabric mesh grill. Definitely with larger hole patterns you do NOT get that sense of "classic"... I'm thinking the right rattle can colors in flat or satin on that 5/32" perf grill would really class up a cab's individuality without losing either acoustic or protective superiority. I was thinking some nice straw look at one time.

TCH came up in past searches for the fEARFul threads and documnetation, I forget why it never made it into the final docs because it definitely got into some of my posts. Just make sure you get 16 (and not 18) gauge or you will have rattle problems far earlier. And inquire about the acoustical open spec. Anything less than around 60% should be avoidable.
