fEARful part nine (9)

I have boxed up the Shuttle 9. It just doesn't have the power that the MBs do. The SD1200 is total overkill, but it has a deeper punch that the LM800 doesn't have. I'm still experimenting with EQ to get that F# happening. I also can't just thwack away at that string and expect it not to go all stupid on me. I'm leaning towards the 1200 because I'm running the preamp gain and instrument volume so low to make sure I don't clip. It's nice to have 750W to bring all that back up.

Has this cleaned up the signal problems that you were having where you were distorting depending upon how you hit?

i think i have a bad 18sound. just tried the cab out a few minutes ago (love, just love that 3015lf. awesome), but only get 'transistor radio' level out of the 18sound. it 'hisses', like it's getting a good amount of juice, but not much else. tried several signal cables and speakons, different channels on the eden and qsc. the 3015 works using the same cables and channel, so...dang :(

I was having those problems when I had the Aguilar OPB-3 preamp in the bass. That thing is SO hot with this bass. I put the stock guts back in and it went away.

I was at GC playing a LMIII and I mean, the clip light was on constantly with the gain at 9:00. I will probably be selling that preamp.

As far as the rest of the onboard preamps and preamps/amps/head stuff, it's still up to the user to set their gear correctly. Some onboard preamps may be hotter than is smart design, but some of those have internal trimpots to alleviate that. And decent heads/peamps can trim the input gain down usually so that nothing is distorting through the signal chain unless it's intentionally induced by an OD/DIST/FUZZ effect or a tube head being purposely overdriven.

Gain structuring is a big part of using gear to its best, for gettting great sounds.

Props to john turner and Chef, who without much nagging helped me replace all the lost images in the Bass frequency/waterfall plots: what they mean to rigs thread. I hated to see this informative and cool thread lay there wounded for so long.

But now it's back - and it's BA-A-A-A-AD!!!

Cool! I will (eventually) check on all the links to my files to make sure that they will still stay live when I take one of my websites down in the next few months.

how 'loud' is the 18sound 'supposed' to be? i took it out of the cab, sent some high pass at a low volume: the cone is 'live', as in it is vibrating from the amps just sitting idle (i have a minor ground hum...old house). i am trying the box out at bedroom practice level, so maybe the 18sound needs more juice? it doesn't distort when more power is applied (xovered between 400 and 1.2k on the eden), and what with the cone free movement, maybe i just need to open it (amp volume) up? that 3015lf is just totally awesome in this box.

I was leaning toward the small stackable plastic. I think they look good. I'll say the heck with it one of these days as I've been playing through the cab for awhile.

The vendors I linked for the smaller corners might not have dimensions up for them, but the corners are maybe 60% as wide and deep. Some might also like the similarly radiused metal corner I linked.

Louder than the 3015LF, assuming you send equal energy into both. But if you're not used to listening to what comes out of a 6 being fed a bass signal crossed at 600-800 Hz or wherever it won't seem like much is happening until you hear it mixed with the 15.

I wonder if the installation went awry. I use an OBP and it has unity gain with the controls set flat. Sounds like some wiring hijinks.

Of course if the gain is cranked on the OBP-3 but you like the tone, you could drop the pickups to reduce the level seen by the preamp. I've done that on my main bass anyway so I don't damage the pickup covers.

This is probably a good moment to mention that with anyone who's having trouble with their cabs they should review their WHOLE signal chain and gain structure while doing their trouble shooting. While you're at it, make sure your speakers are mounted TIGHTLY. They create a whole load of vibration and can create a buzz not unlike distortion when you're playing. Of course the same goes for many other of your mounted parts...I have one handle that likes to buzz when I play on occasion, I know to check for the spring loaded handles when I hear buzzing (although sometimes its sympathetic vibration in walls, floors, objects a few blocks down the road).

If you're a first time builder don't get frustrated if you find yourself running down buzzing, whistling, or other anomalies.

I ended up with 3 sets of corners for my 15/6. Two ended up being the same product from different vendors (the chevron pattered larger corners) and then a set of the smaller corners with the ridges. When I 'tried' each type on my cab, I found that the 'small' corners looked out of scale with the 15/6. They'd probably fit well on the 12/6, but they were underwhelming on the bigger cab, and I wanted something that was a little hardier.

And you're bi-amping, right? So you don't have a crossover upstream from the mid? You definitely should be getting some volume. There's no funkiness with where or however you are crossing over?

the 15 is full of tone. it is not 'dead' or 'just bass'. the 18sound is loud with amp buzz, but unless i give it some juice it is quiet...

When you say that it's 'loud with amp buzz' but just quiet with whatever you're putting through it, I'm not quite sure what you're saying. If you're getting high end hiss, it sounds like its getting signal properly...but maybe its crossed over so high that its not reproducing much below the hiss level? Again, what's your crossover and amp situation?

I backed the power amp channel the mid is on down to make sure I didn't blow it out. Ill try upping it. E en with the mid on a single non bi amped channel it is quiet unless I crank up the eden beyond what I would have it set to for the 15 on its own...I don't see how it can have the usual static hiss and still not have any signal
