Hey folks,

It has been suggested to me recently that I should look at releasing some gear demos. I'm not much of a video editor/producer but have cobbled together an initial video. It's currently uploaded to YouTube but not public as yet. Before diving in head first I thought it would be prudent to get some feedback from the good folks at TalkBass. So, please, if you have the time and inclination, I'd love to hear your thoughts. My feelings aren't easily hurt so please be honest. I know it's a rudimentary video but I'm hoping it works well enough to get the point across.

Good, my opinions, put the text at the end - get straight to the ‘bypass’ (23sec in). Snare ‘snap’ is a a bit much after a few loops - make snare darker.

You’ve convinced me that the Mantle is a hype machine. Which I knew but now I know!!

I like the No Talking format as well, especially when I just want to get an idea of how a given piece of gear sounds. I felt like the text came and went a little too quickly. I suppose I could have paused it, but another 10 seconds or so total would have made it feel less rushed. Just my $.02

Does it matter? The OP asked for opinions on the content, not the motivation.

Putting the text and chain at the end is definitely better. Recording sounds great. Id probably put the drummers a little lower or bass higher in the mix. Its nice context but thats all it should be. I love that you put the chain of recording as a slide but when you're not playing any effects and its displaying the product well, it's not super necessary to have to think about the other parts of the recording process. I'd just go as far to just say "J with rounds" and "P with flats" so it makes the allusion that it doesnt matter what the bass sounds like, it makes it more about the Preamp only

Text at the beginning is a little too quick, but I was able to pause it and read it clearly. I LOVE demos that simply focus on the playing and the product. I liked that you have a drum set in there. Great reference point! As said above, the snare needed to be less sharp to reduce ear fatigue and allow the bass to stick out more

Finger style, flatwounds, Roundwounds - all good choices. I recommend adding in some playing with a pick. In my eyes, most music was recorded with basses played with a pick or fingers. Sometimes both in the same tune. I am especially happy that there was no slap, tapping, or other self-indulgent styles. Nice work! Audio for the bass sounded excellent!

Thanks for the feedback everyone - there’s definitely been a few things mentioned which make sense, and can be implemented relatively easily. I think I’ll recut this video before making it public. I’m planning on having 3-4 videos ready to go when I properly launch the channel, and it would be good to have them all use the same format. After this I plan to release 1-2 videos per week until I run out of gear to demo. It’ll be all preamp/DIs to begin with as I seem to have been stockpiling them of late 😅

Alrighty, here's v2:


Changes made:
Reshot all of the photos used at 16:9 aspect ratio, and with better colour
Moved signal chain etc. info to end of the video
Added a fancy pants title screen
Included demos of pick playing, which is not my forte. Please forgive the sloppiness - if anyone wants to supply high quality recordings of themselves playing with a pick, I'm all ears.

I think that's about it, it would be much appreciated if you could let me know any additional feedback that you have. Thanks!

Nice, altho' I was annoyed I watched the 1st version at all, I like your format.

That said, I like 'em under 6 minutes (that Andy guy is really good at it on guitar, and sometimes bass), and I didn't see you use the "gain"?

FWIW, i have had various folk tell me to do demos, as well, including yesterday; I have a lotta pedals, but video-ing would leave less time to use 'em.
