Feeding the squirrels

My doctor says I need to spend more time outside. Good for the mind and all that.
Thing is, there's not much for me to do outside. At least, not much I'm interested in. This meant I had to do some thinking, and assess what my options actually are. There are squirrels in my yard, and I settled on feeding them.

The first hurdle I face is that I see no squirrels. Usually they're running across the grass, climbing trees and seemingly having a ball. But today there are none. Maybe they're laying low due to the heat.

But I can be patient. I can sit and enjoy some cool drinks, the nice breeze, and the sound of the birds chirping. If the squirrels come, I will be there.

On today's menu are pistachios.

Unshelled because they're cheaper. I don't think the rodents will mind. I could only find salted, so hopefully their little kidneys can handle a bit of extra sodium.

With no beasties showing their faces so far, I'll throw some nuts out in preparation. Maybe the smell will draw them out of hiding.

I feed squirrels everyday.

They are getting used to me, and I to them.

I share this secret with you now, but ask that you do not tell anyone else.

I am beast master of the world.

And, I plan to take over the world.

I shall do so when I have amassed

one million of my lovely rodents to do my bidding.

So the next time you see a cute, friendly little squirrel, give him a peanut, and a penny.

We both thank you. :roflmao:

Having spent half my life along the Gulf of Mexico and the South Atlantic coast, and then moving to Tennessee, I've seen LOTS of seagulls and squirrels. I'm absolutely convinced that there is an undiscovered DNA link whereby squirrels are actually sea gulls with no wings and fur, and sea gulls are squirrels with feathers and wings: They both have a lot of nerve and get into everything.

I, too, can second that all you need is a bird feeder and bird seed. If there are any squirrels in any direction, they will find it. Save the expensive nuts for yourself, they'll eat bird seed till they can hardly walk away, far cheaper.

It's too expensive for me to justify buying one, but if I did, I'd never need streaming video any more.

Or of course there are other home built attempts to loft them into Low Earth Orbit, satisfying as well.

Way more engaging them simply dispatching them with a scoped, side-cock .177 Diana or a .22LR firearm !

Put a 12' 4x4 4 ft in the ground. Get some long nails. Cut the heads off after you drive them in the 4x4 starting at the top and moving down 12" or so with the next nail. Slide an ear of corn over each nail. They will come and so will different birds. Put it where you can see it from your recliner and outside.

Grab an acoustic bass!

My terrier poodle mix is a squirrel hunter. When he was younger, in the summer he kills at least one a day. The last two years he has dwindle to maybe 2 a week he is going to be 10 this year. For me squirrels are pest and destroy my garden. Actually our cats help to keep them away as well but they are more interested in the crows.

I do not think I will have trouble feeding squirrels. The cheapest way to feed them is to go to a feed store where horse people and farmers go. You can repurpose some of the cattle geed like corn and sunflower and it will be cheaper - a 50 ;b bag of corn is under 20,

We have a peanut holder and water bowl that we fill for our squirrels every day. They also finish off any grapes left by the possums we feed at night.
I have one squirrel that's been a regular for some time. He will almost take a peanut from my fingers. Someday he will!!!
