So Anyway, Onley IL has a colony of white squirrels and is quite a tourist attraction.

We were in Saugatuck MI last week and saw a black squirrel near our rental.

Feeding the squirrels

We were in Saugatuck MI last week and saw a black squirrel near our rental.
Same here.
I use shelled peanuts in our main feeder platform to attract crows. Blue Jays also will come and carry them off.
I like crows. Squirrels, not so much.

I made no attempt today. Right around the time I was planning to go out, a tornado alarm went off. Nuts.
Day three... The hunt continues!
Creature(s) of some form or another have once again collected all of the nuts I left behind the other day. I suspect they are hip the where of the distributions, but not the when. But no matter, in time they will learn.
The good news is, it is not hot today. The bad news is, it smells like rain. The forecast says there is a chance of rain. And the sky, uh...

Not trying to be the negative voice in all this, but if you are trying to bring squirrels to your yard, know they can become a real homeowners nightmare. We never had to draw them in as the woods around our home were full of them. Not long after we moved in, wifey started feeding them on our back deck. In less than a month they were reminding us every morning that it was time to fill their pans with bird seed. Things were good for a while, until they chewed through the screen on our attic vent on the end of our house and moved into the attic. LSS, they chewed wiring to the point we had electrocuted rodents and malfunctioning outlets, lamps, etc. the solution turned out to be a couple of Maine coon cats. They kept them out of the attic but they remained in large numbers in the woods at the edge of our yard. As for the damaged wiring? I spent a couple weeks replacing most of the wiring in the attic, which was no fun at all.
I hear about this problem a lot. But I've fed squirrels for forty plus years with no issues except sweeping up peanut shells.
And it is funny how we have one that will come stare in the patio door if the feeder is empty. He's also the one mentioned earlier that will almost take a peanut from my fingers.
Now that I live in AR, I have armadillos to go with all the squirrels, chipmonks, groundhogs.
I don't feed any of the animals, but if need be someday, they could end up feeding me (gasp!).

Careful if you try to eat an armadillo. The carry either leprosy or plague. Or maybe it's both.
Not a problem. I consulted with the local turkey vultures. They said if I wait 'til the dillo carcass rots, then they're safe to eat.
I guess it depends on how many you have. In my case I had dozens in my yard, house, and barn. I wound up applying the .22 solution in a last ditch effort to save my house from ruin.

We have a giant oak tree in the backyard, and our cats have a nice cat tree in the screen porch to sit on and watch them. The cats have their own door to go between the house and porch. This has been wonderful for 20+ years, EXCEPT ....
I once had a loaf of stale bread on the porch. I was keeping it there to throw 2-3 piece/ day out to feed the squirriels. Sometime in the third day, they must have been able to smell it and they decided to help themselves. One chewed through the screen, and three of them came right on into the porch. Our two Maine Coon cats, the mighty hunters that they were, positively freaked out and ran inside the house to watch the ensuing chaos. Seems that the squirrels freaked out that they couldn't find the hole in the screen. Lord know how long they were trapped in the porch, tearing things up, while our brave ass cats watched them while safe indoors.
My wife gets home from work to find two wide-eyed cats by the patio slider.
If they could talk, she said it would go like "uh Mom? ... we got a situation YOU have to deal with here ...".
It's a good thing she grew up as a farm girl, and is pretty handy with a broom.
I'm so sad I only heard about it .... sigh. LOL.
The birds gather around looking expectantly at me.
Try feeding hummingbirds. Super entertaining. You get all day dogfights with amazing flying. They are fearless. I’ve been berated by a hummer hovering in my face for refilling the feeder. On cold mornings, if I’ve brought the feeders in to prevent freezing, they are right there at first light.
They don’t fly at night.
Easy hummer mix: 1 cup sugar, 2 cups very hot water. Stir, cool. Keep the feeders clean, so just enough syrup for the day in warm weather. They can stay full in cold weather.
