the tone pump is the best pre amp ive used, it did take a little bit to learn how to use it. mainly because im used to detents telling me whats "normal" Give it some time, you'll see.

The TP actually "sounds" fine. It's just the way the thing is designed as far as controls and notching goes that confuses the helloutta people, me included...
Once you figure it out though it still has that Spector tone.

Some active pre's don't.
My ex-MTD 535 sounded great by it's lonesome, but with most all of my FX it was kinda lacking.

Haven't had issues w/ the USA 18V HazLabs pre on my NS-5.

Too hot of a signal? just turn down the trim pot on the tone pump. i had the same issue with autowahs and distortions, they seemed to trigger with the slightest touch, but a quick turn on the trim pot fixed that beautifully.

Yep. It was the same on my old Modulus Q5's, had to taper the output on them to play nice w/ my FX spread.
