Check out a girl named Kim Nielsen-Parsons of a band called Phantom Blue. Link Removed She was a friend of mine back in the 80's (I've recently gotten back in touch with her). She is without a doubt one of the best bassists, male OR female, that I have ever known. I wouldn't necessarily say she's famous, but she has definitely enjoyed her share of success in this business. Something that you may not hear when you look into her music is the fact that she is an incredible funk bassist as well.
