fences?

Around here we have a mix of fences (most of them see-through), tight bushes, and trees.

Most terrains are on mountainous land, so there is often a slope between two leveled lots. A minimal fence will prevent you from falling. Trees or bushes are chosen for privacy (and the pleasant shade).

Fences also keep animals and very young kids from wandering on the street (careless suburb drivers are a much more frequent threat than animals, thieves or gun-wielding maniacs).

I do not have a fence nor do I want one. I would rather the deer did not come in my yard, but you need an 8 foot fence to stop them so I use fencing around my gardens only. On one side our neighbor did put up a fence to keep his dogs in. Not only does it not work all the time it has deteriorated and looks ratty. I also have a good sized lot that backs up to woods rather than other property, so I don't have to worry about anything other than 2 neighbors.

No fences around the house or yard here, but about 3/4 of a mile of high-tensile fence around the horse pastures to keep them in. The neighbors get upset when the herd is grazing on their front lawn in the morning. I found out the hard way that the electric tape temporary fence is just that - temporary.

Tape might be a bit of a mis-nomer. It is fairly heavy 1" plastic tape with fine strands of wire braided into it, charged by a 10 joule solar fence controller. It will about stop your heart if you touch it when the grass is wet. What I did not know is that the constant motion from wind eventually made the wires fray and break inside the tape. Next step - rounding up horses after frantic call from neighbors.

Haha, silly me.
I was picturing black electrical tape, like I might have in my gear kit.
I was thinking "someone would use that to pen horses?".
:p

:p Without the charge, it works about as well as electrical tape. I've used some real trash in a pinch for repairs - scraps of barbed wire, rope, and even duct tape once. I finally bit the bullet and paid to have a professional crew install the high tensile. No great escapes for several years now.

You couldnt have found some felled branches and put together a ranchero fence? :D

Here in Texas - EVERYBODY has privacy fences. In fact, I didn't know it was called "privacy fences" until I had a college professor (from the north) refer to it as such. The concept of a chain see through fence, or in fact - no fence at all - is completely foreign to me. Until that day, I thought it was that way pretty much everywhere, I had no clue "privacy fences" were a rare thing.

i've notices in the States from movies that alot of homes dont seem to have fences around them. In Australia the first thing we put up is a 6 foot lapped and capped pine fence, no cracks for neighbours to peer through type thing. Is there a reason why places dont have fences?

You have a lot of curiosity about the States, don't you?

We have a chain link fence. Cheaper than privacy, more effective than than doggy-zappers. Especially since our dogs wouldn't get the brain signal that they'd been zapped till long afterward. So it keeps the dogs and the kids in, most other dogs and people out. Doesn't help with the deer, but it's very effective with the meter reader. :-)

We have tensioned wire fencing all around with an electric wire running on top + more fencing to make separate pastures for the goats and llamas, each horse (they have problems with each other apperantly), and the main yard area (house, barn garage and pets). We live on 7-8 acres though and about 20% of the property is concealed from the neighbors 80% of the time.

It's odd living close to the bottom of a valley...

Where I live, in an apartment complex, there's a 10ft iron security fence with code and wireless entrance/exit access. You cant even leave without a code or clicker. Along the back stretch and the side facing the bar the fence is topped with concertina wire. It keeps people out and cars in.
