Fender 1964 Custom Shop - Active Electronics

Hey all.

I'm new to these forums so excuse my noobness.

I have a Fender 1964 Custom Shop Relic and i absolutely love the way it plays.
The sound, not so much.

I like more of the modern aggressiveness sound in my bass.
I was thinking of putting in a new preamp - i'm thinking a John East one for the easy fit in and out.
And some active pickups - Possibly humbucker pickups in the J size.
I'm open to any ideas though??
I will be keeping the bass for life so re-sale is not important.
Also the reverse tuners are...annoying haha. Might change them too.

Anyone else done this?

I would avoid using active pickups if there is going to be a preamp. The preamp serves the same function as the active pickups, so you won't gain anything by having them, plus, you could possibly lose headroom by chaining gain stages.

Ah really? Did not know that.

Thanks mate. What would be some good passive pickups for an active preamp?

I would just change the preamp and keep the original pickups. A preamp can change a lot.

There are thousands. You have to be specific. What aspect of the bass is lacking, and what do you hope to accomplish with modifications?

I want a meatier more modern sound. Not scooped but more of a thump in the low-mid spectrum.

I really like that Spector sound but i'm guessing alot of that is in the woods as well.

I put a set of 27:1 HB-7 Hipshots on my Fender Basses and love them. If you do happen to consider the Hipshots be sure and buy the Stainless versions as the Nickel looks to different (sort of a slight brownish tinge to them) compared to the Chrome hardware on Fender Basses.

Cool, I put Black Hipshots on my Peavey. Glad you are going with black as Hipshot no longer appears to have stainless. They have "Chrome" (actually nickel), Black and Gold)
