Fender 60th Anniversary Jazz Bass

When I lived in Japan, sometime between 2002 & 2006, Fender Japan had a ‘66 (?) reissue with the bound neck with dots - I thought it was so cool, I think it’s a transitional year. Almost got one but ultimately did not. This one looks pretty cool!

I saw one like your talking about for sale up here in Seattle recently. Unfortunately I didn't pull the trigger and now I come to realize that they are impossible to find. Here is a pic of the one I saw.

Seriously, I had one of those MIJ non-export models. Piano Black, three-ply 'plate, dot and bound neck and matching black headstock. No Lollipops, though, which may have been a costing issue.

Yeah the one I saw had a matching headstock. I would have snatched it up but I wasn’t overly thrilled with the color

As of right now,I really love the 60th anniversary bass w/alnico 5 custom shop pups!
Just got 1963 fender jazz bass and it sounds just as good!
might get the lollipop tuners if I can find one from fender.....

I wonder if the '65-style binding-with-dots necks of these basses are the same as the necks for the Fender American Rarities Jazz. They look and feel the same.

I really liked Rarities Jazz,Very similar feel but decided to buy 60’s Anniversary instead due to the radius 7.25 vs 9.5

These are great basses! Color and tuning machines can be changed I just did this in all nitro metal flake - original '66 set of tuners:

I got a defective neck on the Flea I had. Bad S curve. Sweetwater took it back tho and cut me a deal on my 2nd American Original 60s J. The Flea isn't in the same ballpark as the US 60th. It sounds great with the PV 64 pickups, but it lacks in build quality and isn't worth the price tag at all.

Yeah, I had a Flea and was pretty underwhelmed. The U.S. 60th is head and shoulders above it in every way.

Do the control cavity and the neck pickup share a common rout, and does it have the round CNC machining hole? Seriously thinking about going for this bass, but I prefer to play my Jazz Bass au naturel. If someone could remove pickguard and snap a picture, that would be much appreciated.

There's no CNC holes under the pickguard. Pickup route is the shape of the pickup. No shared channel with the control cavity.

NP! The Mexican road worn has the CNC hole, but it also doesn't have the shared cavity.

Here you go, I couldn't resist having a look underneath the pickguard last year. I prefer it with the pickguard on though, I don't like screw holes with no pickguard - but at least there are no routing holes

If you like Jazz basses, I don't think you would be disappointed if you got one, I love mine. Try and play one first if you can, as the 7.25 fingerboard radius and U neck profile is not for everyone, but like any instrument, if you play it long enough it will feel good. After a year of having mine it is beginning to feel played in, and stands up to the Custom Shop Jazz basses I have tried.

Oh my--how splendid. Yes, that is a lot of screw holes, so maybe a clear plexiglass guard for those times I want to leave a little something to the imagination. Recently played a '74 AVRI with a beefy 7.25 U, even beefier than my actual 1974. I think this new guy sounds almost perfect.
