Niiiice! I haven't seen that red burst before. I don't need a P, but if I did, I'd go for that over the same old axes they've been making for years.

Any required P tones are more than adequately covered by my old school export model Aerodyne. Does anyone know the position of the pickup in these new P's relative to the older export models?

I know, I know, why ask if I'm not interested. I surely don't need a P, but that gives me GAS!

I purchased a Black Babicz FCHZ4 Z Series 4-String Bass Bridge from Invalid Link Removed website... purchased about six months ago for a project that fell through. But all was not lost, the Bass gods smiled, and dropped a new 2022 Aerodyne into my lap a couple of days ago. I installed the bridge this afternoon, it was a drop-in replacement for the stock bridge. I am really impressed with the combination of the Aerodyne and FCH4Z, plays wonderfully. Here are some pics, the pics are not good... but the rig is excellent. :)

Hello All, I am going to swap out the Aerodyne's stock strings with a set in my box of unused toys. I am using all string types displayed below, with the exception of the EB Cobalt flats. After reading many of the comments on this thread, I leaning towards trying something new and using the EB Cobalts... I didn't realize I had a set on hand.

Currently, I have the D'Addario Tapewounds on a CV 60's Jazz... they are black and I like their feel and tone. The Roto 77 flats are on my CV 60's P, with the EB Roundwound on my MIM Player Plus P... no complaints, both feel and sound good to me.

Any recommendations or comments before I crack open the EB Cobalts?

No recommendations, only comments on electric bass strings in general:
One factor is string tension, which influences how the strings feel ("wet noodles", etc.) Switching between high-tension and low-tension typically requires truss rod adjustment. Some companies publish how many pounds of pressure their strings provide, some don't, some just hint ("slinky", "low-tension flexible flats", etc.)

Another factor is manufacture, but you probably already know about the general tone and feel differences between round-wound, flat-wound, tape-wound, etc. and their many sub-varieties (e.g. nickle-wound, hex-core, etc.).

Then, within each manufacture, even at similar tension, there is tonal variety. For example, I wanted to switch from a round-wound "zing" to a flat-wound "thump" but without changing my truss rod. I found that my rounds (GHS Boomers) were a high-tension string, and that both D'Addario Chromes and GHS Precision Flats were similar in tension. But Chromes are known to be one of the brighter flat-wounds, and Precision Flats are know to be among the darker-sounding. I tried both, found this to be true, and selected accordingly.

I'm an engineer type, so this kind of anal-retentive research is right up my wheel house. More normal people might just throw on the Cobalts and see how they like them. You be you. And have fun.

Thank you for the informative response, it is very helpful. I too am an engineering type, so I appreciate this type of dialog. I am old in life, but very young and naive in my musical journey... I am enjoying learning about equipment setup/mods/tuning. I am a network/software engineer by trade... heading towards retirement and using path of music to keep the creative/technical part of my mind active, along with avoiding the mosh pits.

I like your suggestion regarding keeping similar string tension to minimize truss rod adjustment, makes total sense. I did notice the tension difference between the round-wounds and flat-wounds when changing strings on my other basses... I think the tape-wounds fall into the "wet-noodle" category. :laugh: Are tape-wound strings considered flat-wound? With my limited experience, given the choice, I prefer playing with flat/tape-wound over round-wound strings and they help hide my poor muting skills.

Regarding the Aerodyne, my initial thought process was to try the Cobalt flat-wound to add a little "zing" when needed. The D'Addario tape-wounds can add a little pop when I dig in.

I think the stock Aerodyne OEM strings are nickel plated steel (.045-.100), no idea of their tension range. Of the string packages list, I could find some tension info on the tape-wound: 146.15LBs, Total Tension Set 80LBs & 420LBs. I'm gonna have google to find string specs and tension range/values.

Before I start, know that all the strings I'm referring to in this post are of the .100-gauge variety. ;)

I experimented with Ernie Ball Cobalt Flats when they first came out. In a word, "Interesting", both in sound and feel. There are incredibly small gaps between the outer wraps, so they have a bit more texture compared to other flats, but they're still way smoother than rounds. I suspect it's how they manage to keep the "slinkiness" Ernie Ball prides itself upon.

As for their sound, I've frequently said they live in a sort of "neutral zone" between rounds and flats. They sound neither quite like one or the other, but have elements of both, probably because they have more "zing" than any other flats I've encountered. To that effect, I'd say give them a try. They are unique sounding strings and whether you like them or not, they should make your 'Dyne sound quite interesting.

I haven't used any of my reserves of Cobalt Flats for a while, but because of their particular sound, I've been planning on installing some on my Fender Blacktop Jazz. That beastly bass is so aggressive that I need something that can somewhat tame it. I was hoping the coated D'Addario XT's would do the trick, like they did for my '70s-style Jazz, but it would seem I'll have to start pushing into new territory to strike the right balance between "thump" and "zing"...and whoo-boy does that Blacktop bring plenty of both to the table! :wideyed:
