Fender Aerodyne Club!

I remember saying earlier how I'd like to see it become a whole series, much like it's been for decades in Japan, and that excites me, too. And I totally get it if, to achieve the new rollout, they had to free up manufacturing capacity by halting the classic Export line.

The cynical side of me is picturing some FMIC exec telling over the phone that the Aerodyne AJB and AJB-D models were fine and all, but they need to be updated into something "fresh, new, hip or whatever"...

...then turn to the papers on his desk to sign off on another decade's worth of Sunburst P's and J's.

Like I said, "cynical", but is it far beyond the realm of possibility? :bored:

Personally, I'm just a little bummed that, in the process of uplifting the Aerodyne to it's own series, they're built upon an ergonomic blueprint that I know won't work for me. :( That being said, I still have my first-ever bass, as well as a couple of necks I've harvested over the years, so life goes on.

Speaking of "necks", and much more on the brighter side for me, I'm excited about my next, two FrankenFender Projekts, both of which are nearing completion and will be receiving Aerodyne necks. Here's a preview of one...

I think I know how this story ends...or at least how it did in my case:

Sweet! A very cool and sensible choice!

Not a Blacktop at the core, but rather, it's built around an American Deluxe Dimension HH body. That was what @Ramonesfan59 had going.

This was my Blacktop/Aerodyne fusion using the very same neck. I plan on giving it's pickguard the same red accent using my "DIY Sharpie Tint Technique™", but I'm still undecided if I'll include the red GHS Limited-Edition Infinity Steels with the final product. It will depend on how they sound when paired up with the Duncan NYC pickups, preamp and coil-switch I'm amassing for this "2-D Projekt".

Oops! Could have sworn you were working from a Blacktop Precision body. :cautious:

Not at all. But Fender is a business, after all, and sunburst P’s and J’s are the foundation of that business. And while I’m not one of those who clamor for Fender to constantly innovate, I’m happy that they’ve actually done something different this time. And those sunburst P’s and J’s generate the revenue that allows them to do such things.

<subtly moves Sunburst '70s-style Jazz out of sight> You don't say... :D

I have to agree with pretty much everything you've said. This change is a good thing. Upon some reflection today, I'm probably just feeling some "sour grapes", what with the new models falling outside my personal ergonomics. Like I said, life goes on and I'm still happy with my first-ever Aerodyne, as well as the parts I've rendered from others. :)

I’m also conscious of a slight twinge of sadness that the black Export edition is no more, as the new colours aren’t quite my cup of tea. I’m happy I got mine when I did. I really hope the new line is successful, and that we’ll see some interesting variations going forward.

Look at us, being all "adult" about this! Aren't we the mature ones! :smug:

So, you wanna go trash-talk people in...oh, I dunno...some Gibson club or something? :roflmao:

Can I finally join the cool kids' club with the rest of y'all? I just got this sweet thing Wednesday!

I really dig it. Excellent build quality, flawless finish, fantastic fretwork. Sounds like a classic J should sound.

Anyone else who wants a number and was missed (sorry), quote this message and ask. Afaik, nobody did actually ask since last time, but I haven't been active here.

I think the Aerodyne is for Fender what the Cutlass/Caprice basses were for EBMM.
Its natural to develop a fondness for the "classic" lines of the way its been made for a long time and when a MFG comes out with a revision or twilights a model there is always going to be some penchant for the way it was before.

I actually quite like the new Aerodynes except the colours, and for me at least, the black Aerodyne has always been one of the greatest-looking basses ever. By comparison, the new ones look a bit washed-out to me, but tastes do differ, and the black export version had a good run. If they ever put out a black version of the new Aerodyne Special Precision, though, I'd be all over it. :)

I have a black export and a silver non-export, but this one is on my wish list. I think this is the only one so far that is sweet.

I acquired My Aerodyne around 2005, and it was the first bass I purchased - a used Ebay purchase.

it's the black lacquer P/J with no fret markings and for a long time I never knew any other Aerodyne configurations existed.

I have been tempted to sell once or twice but a little tingle has always told me to keep it. The only other Aerodynes that have tempted me are the seemingly rare models with a translucent flamed maple top-cap.

Somewhere in my basement workshop is a set of replacement pickups for it that were purchased a few years ago .... some fairly chaotic life events have kept me from completing this and several other projects - but soon I hope to post a review and updated photos!

Friends don't let friends sell basses. 'Nuff said.
