Fender Aerodyne Club!

No recommendations, only comments on electric bass strings in general:
One factor is string tension, which influences how the strings feel ("wet noodles", etc.) Switching between high-tension and low-tension typically requires truss rod adjustment. Some companies publish how many pounds of pressure their strings provide, some don't, some just hint ("slinky", "low-tension flexible flats", etc.)

Another factor is manufacture, but you probably already know about the general tone and feel differences between round-wound, flat-wound, tape-wound, etc. and their many sub-varieties (e.g. nickle-wound, hex-core, etc.).

Then, within each manufacture, even at similar tension, there is tonal variety. For example, I wanted to switch from a round-wound "zing" to a flat-wound "thump" but without changing my truss rod. I found that my rounds (GHS Boomers) were a high-tension string, and that both D'Addario Chromes and GHS Precision Flats were similar in tension. But Chromes are known to be one of the brighter flat-wounds, and Precision Flats are know to be among the darker-sounding. I tried both, found this to be true, and selected accordingly.

I'm an engineer type, so this kind of anal-retentive research is right up my wheel house. More normal people might just throw on the Cobalts and see how they like them. You be you. And have fun.

;->

Agreed - strings in general are so very subjective - it's like ice cream, so many brands - so many flavors.

My Aerodyne was my first bass & I strung it
with Black Beauties just because it looked cool. Later I did some non-invasive mods as Inwas underwhelmed by the pickups, later on I found I was not playing it as much - I have become more of a 5 string player & considered selling.

I got involved with an music circle jam group & was their primary bassist for several years - we did allot of acoustic roots type music & some oldies & I was looking for more of a classic old school thump, a set of DR Legends & the Aerodyne became my go to bass for those sessions.

Later I discovered Ben & Jerry's Chocolate Therapy :)

Personally I'm a Rotosound guy, so I use Swing bass 66's on mine. If I need clarity/bright strings I'll go for Slinky's, but I don't like how they feel. They do sound bright and punchy.

We all have different tastes here so it's impossible to recommend a set in particular.

Before I start, know that all the strings I'm referring to in this post are of the .100-gauge variety. ;)

I experimented with Ernie Ball Cobalt Flats when they first came out. In a word, "Interesting", both in sound and feel. There are incredibly small gaps between the outer wraps, so they have a bit more texture compared to other flats, but they're still way smoother than rounds. I suspect it's how they manage to keep the "slinkiness" Ernie Ball prides itself upon.

As for their sound, I've frequently said they live in a sort of "neutral zone" between rounds and flats. They sound neither quite like one or the other, but have elements of both, probably because they have more "zing" than any other flats I've encountered. To that effect, I'd say give them a try. They are unique sounding strings and whether you like them or not, they should make your 'Dyne sound quite interesting.

I haven't used any of my reserves of Cobalt Flats for a while, but because of their particular sound, I've been planning on installing some on my Fender Blacktop Jazz. That beastly bass is so aggressive that I need something that can somewhat tame it. I was hoping the coated D'Addario XT's would do the trick, like they did for my '70s-style Jazz, but it would seem I'll have to start pushing into new territory to strike the right balance between "thump" and "zing"...and whoo-boy does that Blacktop bring plenty of both to the table! :wideyed:

Very true! What we each gravitate to is very personal. That being said, I'd suppose there are times when one has to abide with what works in a band and/or recording situation. I mean, how many times have we heard someone say, "I love the sound I get out of <brand X>, but when playing with my band, <brand Y> just settles so nicely in the mix", or some similar sentiment?

To drag the discussion out even more... In furtherance of the discussion...

That tracks. I tried a set of Legends once on another P/J Jazz, but they came off almost immediately. They were all thump & thud with no zing whatsoever. While that wasn't what I was looking for, I could tell they'd probably work for someone chasing that '60s Motown sound.

Any idea how they compare to the nickel/steel RotoBass 45's? If you have, is it fair to assume the 66's have even more zing? I just put a set of 45's on a Jazz armed with dual-coil Bartolini B-Axis pups and to my ear, they bring a good deal of brightness and punch.

They're brighter. They have the right amount of clarity and punch, without being excessive. As someone who plays hard rock mostly, it fits my style. If I need even more for stuff like slap, that's when I'll use Slinkies. 45's are more mellow.

Definitely give the EBCFs a try on an Aero, and consider the 40-95 set.
Traded mine away last year, and now that I'm back in the club I've got some on order.
Excellent on a stock Squier VM Jazz as well.

Definitely give the EBCFs a try on an Aero, and consider the 40-95 set.
Traded mine away last year, and now that I'm back in the club I've got some on order.
Excellent on a stock Squier VM Jazz as well.
I may likely do that sometime in the future. In the meantime, I finally put a set of Cobalt flats on the Fender Blacktop Jazz I mentioned in post #3160 and the results are fantastic! They really helped dial back it's almost-overwhelming aggression, but without sacrificing the top end!

The neck on my Q series CIJ is superior to the one on my '22 MIJ - smoother tone, less barky - and the EBCFs sound great on it finger style.

Whoever's dishing out club #s, I'm a joiner.

How’s minty serving you?
What stings did you finally settle on with it?
Still digging the aero, the SIT foundations work well on it.

The ghost of your Aero haunted me for months, so when a local CIJ came up, I had to try it. Has some mods I like as well.

Glad you mentioned the foundations, I should order another set.

Put on some Roto 66 just last night since I stole away its LaBella LTF. They work great dimed, but jury's still out on their flexibility.

A Q-series? Nice! That definitely lands it in the first year or two of the Aerodyne's production history! :bookworm:

And yeah, mine sound great, too. So, when I hear people say their stock 'Dyne pups are "weak" or "anemic", I'm all like, "Really? Mine sound great! What gives?! o_O"

What's funny is, I initially read your post as a comment on the "neck", not the "neck pickup", 'cuz if you were, I'd wholeheartedly agree there, too. Somewhere along the line, they changed the neck finish from a thin gloss, almost a semi-gloss, to a much toothier satin finish. Compared to my CIJ T-series (2007-ish) neck, the ones I've sampled over the past five or six years almost felt like sandpaper in comparison. (I know...I know..."personal preferences" and all that.)

It makes me wonder if the finish changed when Fender-Japan switched factories and returned to the "MIJ" designation or if it was one of many compromises made when FMIC parted ways with Kanda-Shokai. Who knows? To be fair, maybe my fretting hand simply got all bougie and spoiled by my well-worn Aerodyne's neck.

Weak pups? Nah, just raise 'em up . I added foam to stabilize since the covers rattled some. And, nit-picky I know, the older pup covers have less of a sharp edge to them and blunted corners. Maybe merely a variation in manufacture, but appreciated.

That said, its tone is crazy sensitive to even the slightest change in pickup heights - 1/12 of a turn on any of the six screws leads to audibly different interactions between neck and bridge. There must be some art to it.

Set just right I get a sound reminiscent of using an Orange Squeeze.

Your comp of the neck finishes fits *exactly* my experience. I'm preferring the thin gloss over the newer satin. A pleasure to hold, and feels like more care went into it. Similar for the body... feels a little less grabby than the finish on the 75th anniv MIJ, but has less shine.

YES! That is my ONLY gripe about my Aerodyne Special Jazz - the "gritty" satin neck. It feels like construction paper.

The modern Fender MIA and MIM stuff all have great satin finishes that are very smooth to the touch, but not sticky like gloss. I don't know why Japan had to go and muck it all up.

To be fair, I don't notice it while I'm actually playing. It has never caused me to miss a big slide or given me calluses or anything like that, but it's between songs where I'm just resting/holding the neck that I have quick thoughts of "ick. This doesn't feel as nice as my MIM Player/MIM Standard/MIA Performer, etc"

I have two more MIJs in transit from the land of the rising sun as we speak, an Elemental and Jino signature Jazz basses. Curious to see what the satin necks on those are like. There isn't a lot of hands-on experience or detailed info about them that I've found in English. Everyone just says "satin neck" but no one has explained whether it's the good MIA/MIM satin or the weird "textured" satin. We should find out Monday.
