Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass

can you please tell me more about this bass ? it look gorgeous, but i played a precision and a jazz bass yesterday at my local music gear store, and i prefer the tone *and* the neck of a precision, even if i found these were really similar. what neck do we have on aerodyne jazz bass, since pups are in P/J mode...

That's a CIJ nonexport Aerodyne. It has a J neck. They're also making a P version. The Aerodyne series is getting great reviews and are a nice value. Mine is the American import version of the J and the craftsmanship is better than a MIA Jazz I had a few years ago.

yeah i know about the P version but the finish is not as sexy as the non export aerodyne jazz

i'm very disappointed, i realy like the body of the jazz and that hot glossy red finish :crying:

anyway, does the P pup on the aerodyne sound as well as the one on a regular P (with no J pup) ?

I have this bass in black and cant recommend highly enough. Its light, nicely finished and has a wide scope of sound.

My only very slight criticism is the rosewood fingerboard is a little "open", if you know what I mean, it has very small gaps in the wood fibre. I keep mine well lemon oiled up, but overall its fine.

I own a Made in Japan version like that. The pickups are awesome; P/J. It plays like a beast, and it looks great. The finish is beautiful, but hard to keep clean. It has great highs. The bottom end isnt as thick as some basses, but its not really made for that I guess.

Its worth the money. They could charge more I think. I'd get the Japanese nonimport version off of ebay or whatever just for the reason its not completely black. I have the black one and though it looks great I kinda regret it cause its hard to keep clean.

If you want another bass dont hesistate. I love this bass.

I used to own an Aerodyne Jazz in black, before the came with pickguards. It was a cool bass, had a nice sound, I'm just a bigger fan of Neck-Thru basses. I put a BadAssII on it and it helped the sustain, but I never really got the full tone I wanted out of it. Sounded freakin' excellent on the songs I recorded with it though, a little Sans Amp got it sounding awesome. I'll put the link to the songs below of you want to hear it in action.

i just won the bid on eBay, i gotta get her in a couple of weeks :hyper:

i think this is going to be so nice with the upcoming LMII head :smug: tried LM products in my local music gear store, couldn't believe the tone and power of these things ! and i managed to get a rock sound out of it, which was one of the points i wanted (besides lightweight, powerful and sexy:D )

i'm a bit excited right now
will send pics of my rig when it's complete if you want to !

I see where you might think that, but I've compared the Aerodyne to a Hwy1 P and a MIM standard P, both of which had alder bodies, and IMO the Aerodyne sounded just a big, or bigger, than the other. Definately superior to the MIM model, and a little more raw/less tame than the Hwy1, but just a deep sounding. These are one of the best bang-for-buck basses out there.

Basswood seems sounds fine it's a less focused sound - more in the mahogany realm than the Ash. I've had a couple of guitars in Basswoods and I like it. G&L uses or used basswood (Tillia (?sp)) as back material on it's premium lam tops for a bit. Not sure if they still do that or not.

The knocks on bass wood are
1. it's soft so it dings easily - HD poly finishes seem to solve that ...

2. it can be heavey - neither of my gutar's were but I've heard that the weight of the blanks can be somewhat variabe.

3. it is best suited for lam tops or solid finishes as it seems to have un-interesting grain structure

I had one of these for a while. Great bass, nice finish and fretwork. Sound was decent, but not outstanding. Two gripes:

1) Top bound edge of the body is sharp. It can dig into your forearm when playing.

2) Due to small radius of the neck, the string-to-string volume of the J pickup is difficult to balance properly. The E and G strings are noticeably louder than the D and A strings. Something to think about if you like the solo'd J bridge pickup tone.

that's exactly it... maybe not because of the basswood but because of the amount of wood missing... the carved body means you lose a huge chunk of wood

my Aerodyne is very light & a bit neck heavy... great for throwing around over long gigs but there's not quite as much oomph from the bass as yer typical full sized Fender body... I can compensate by dialling in some sub harmonic frequencies & low end from my rig etc, but it's not quite the same as genuine rumbly wood beef :)

I love my aerodyne more than any other gear i have ever owned:D. i got myn of a friend for 250£ and straight away had fraylin pickups put on insted of the stock ones and stuck a fender bridge cover on it (cos im an indervidual dont you know) and i cant see my slef ever getting another bass (un less i found a kramer 650b and had the money but id still use me jazz as my main bass). althoug i dont like the look of the new ones with pickgaurds they dont look as classy.

hehe richard, that's the reason why i imported from japan, the all black, no pickguard jazz aerodyne has zero sex appeal to me :) too black, too shiny... I don't blame those who love it in this finish, i can understand, but that's just not me.

note that i now use a Presonus BlueTube as preamp, then i go into the DBX 163X then straight into the effect return of the LM II. It adds some great tube blur and a bit of growl :) Gotta try to use the damn tube it in the effect loop, just to A/B.

I do love the tone of my bass but i can't help wanting to upgrade !!

* new pups (any advice ? i've been told EMG are too shiny, thinkin' about Bartolini or Benedetti)
* black dome knobs :p
* another Markbass Traveler 121H !
