I was looking for a jazz bass as well a few months ago, so I went to my local music store and tried out the American Deluxe. It's a great instrument, but it didn't wow me, especially for the price.
That's when a friend told me about Carvin's Jazz Bass model. It's almost exactly the same as a Fender American Deluxe but, depending on how you want it built, about $700 cheaper. Still made in the US and both active/passive electronics. The neck and weight is very similar between them too. I would definitely check it out if you are looking for an active/passive Jazz.
