Fender American Performer Mustang Bass Thoughts

Bumping this because I'm interested too.

I live in a country where I can't try them before buying, so here's my related question... Any reason to buy the American Performer instead of the JMJ if I'm only really interested in the classic Mustang tone?

I RECENTLY had the itch to start playing bass so I bought a new mustang burst performer and same day bought the Mexican mustang . they are both to my ears and eye pretty great in both fit and finish.
the performer I got from Sweetwater was set up with new flats , the Mexican was bought with factory set up still plays great but the performer is certainly next level just not sure it's 800.00 dollars better although I feel the price is fair for the quality.
Actually bought the Mexican mustang from adorama for 415.00 shipped found a year old link on this site clicked buy and later realized the sale was almost a year ago next thing I know I got an Email saying your order has shipped .

Gelb, my local guitar store got the new Mustang in Sunburst in stock and I gave it a test drive today. I've recently played a number of short scales; Epi's, Guilds, MIJ Mustangs and a Lakland HB-30. Only the Lakland was hard to put down. But, I bought the American Performer Mustang. It's beautiful. The neck is perfect, wood grain lovely and the fit and finish perfect too. TI flats will arrive in two days, so until then it's the rounds they shipped it with.

I'll probably change the pickguard to black - the pearly one is too upbeat for the blues. Just like my Gibson SG, the Mustang is perfect for what it does and they make a great pair.

I bought one and sent it back. It was a beautiful bass and I loved the color and the neck was perfect. My issue is it was string through body and there are only a couple of sets of strings that will fit it properly. I’m not into flats so the TI flats were not a consideration for me. About the only thing left was the stock Fender strings and they just barely sounded ok to me. I didn’t want to be limited to that. The top of the strings on regular short scale strings the winding stopped too soon and the small part of the string that threads in the tuner laid on the nut and was WAY too small for the cut in the nut. So I sent it back. The reason I post this is so anyone considering this bass should be aware of it before buying.

Anyone played the Fender American Performer Mustang bass and have any thoughts on it?
The singer/harpist/guitarist in the blues/jazz band I recently joined bought one, and it is absolutely superb. I don't know how it compares to the JMJ's pickup, but the pickup on it is excellent. And the added J pickup is actually useful if you like that PJ or J bass midscoop thing. Which I do on occasion, but the draw is the Mustang pickup for sure. Highly recommended if you like shorties...IMHO way better than the MIM PJ Mustang.
