Well... don't know what bass you have, but my American Special has a jazz neck on it. Or a neck that's much smaller at the nut than a standard P.

Says neck width is 1-5/8" at the nut.

I have an American Professional Precision and my Sandblasted American Special Precision and both have a 1.625” nut. The difference is that the Specials have what Fender used to call a Slim C profile. That’s why it is such a comfortable neck. Great basses.

I bought my American Honeyburst Special Precision new in 2014. By that point I had several other more expensive P basses, and didn't "need" it. But it really played great. Other than throwing a black guard and strap locks on it, mine is stock. (I think that the black guard gives it a bit of a 70s vibe.) I currently have four Precisions, and love them all. This is the only one that I keep round wounds on.

After playing mine, a good friend of mine bought an American Special in black and plays the hell out of it.

I did buy a really nice Fender G & G tweed case to keep it in, it provides decent protection and adds some class.

I think that $550 is a good price. If you like how it plays, you should buy it. Here is a photo of mine. Although you can't tell in this photo, it has gotten shiny where my forearm touches it. It is my favorite thing about this finish.

I love mine. Got mine in a trade so it cost me around 550. Traded a Fender Coronado for it and I have never regretted it. They are cheaper because the bridge and tunning keys are Mexican, it’s not a string through body and they don’t come with a case. Honestly it’s the most comfortable fender neck I have played and people ask me all the time about it when they play it thinking it’s something nicer than it is. I put quarter pounders in mine and a basicz bridge and it plays and sounds just as good if not better than any stock p bass standard. I don’t buy into string through bodies.View attachment 3176123

I have one. Use it as my main giging bass. It's a great instrument and $550 is a very good price IMHO. Go for it.

Resurrecting this old threat as I just got a 2011 American Special PB in candy Apple red with maple fretboard. I’m in love with it, and love it the way it is - stock electronics and hardware.

Just thought on upgrading the tuners to hipshot and the bridge to a Fender high mass, but just because I have that hardware around.

No need to upgrade the electronics IMHO.
