Fender american standard P bass or MM stingray

Stingray is more versatile. That said, I would also go with the P.
What kind of sound are you aiming for? That should be the determining factor.

FWIW, I think they're both equally versatile... depending on the player. An Am Standard P and EBMM SR are about the same price. Play a few of each... and go with the one that speaks to you.

I can get P bass tone with neck pickup solo'd and do some eq. on my Stingray HH but I still want to have a P just because.. 
An 08 Am Std P with maple neck gets pretty growly.
So does the SR.
If you're into Slap, I'd think you'd tend to favor the SR.
Do you have a large music store nearby?
If you haven't already, you need to play a few of each.
IMO, You can't go wrong either way.
Both are classic...
P-Basses really aren't very good for slap. If you're going to be doing much of that at all I would go with the StingRay.
I own both and I'd say that they are both extremely versatile, just in different ways.
My Stingray 5 has incredible tonal versatility with the 5 way pickup selector and a very powerful active 3 way EQ. I can get a wide variety of tones that all sound fantastic.
My Precision V doesn't have the tonal variety, but sounds fantastic in almost any situation I put it in. One basic tone that is extremely versatile all on its own.
You're talking apples and oranges, so you'd have to pick which versatility is more important to you.

I'm going to go ahead and offer a counter opinion to this. I've played a P-Bass with a maple neck/fingerboard for 26 years and I love that bass to death, but for slap it flat-out sucks. Fortunately for me, I'm pretty poor at slap so no one ever asks me to do it.
Same here but 6 months ago I would have said the reverse.... and in 6 months I might be back AGAIN from my P to my SR.
Both are great and both aren't the most flexible basses in the world. If you slap, a SR is much better. A P will most other music.
