Fender American Vintage '62 Precision

Hi,

has anyone experience in Fender American Vintage '62 Precision bass? Are they good quality or perhaps of high quality? How detailed they are, and what about the sound, can it be compared to traditional 60's sound? What about the price/quality relation?

Comparing to American Series or earliers American Standard (90's) Precision bass, are there any differencies except for vintage details and different kind of neck and electronics? The price is higher, but is the only reason the vintage thing? Sound perhaps?

How do you feel about the QC on these basses in general?

I got two high quality Warwicks, but want to add a P-bass to the collection. Can't afford a real 60's thing. ;)

Thanks in advance,
Mika

PS. The other option I've considered is 70's Precision, there is a thread for that speculation... ;)

Real nice basses, the only drawback is the vintage truss rod, which requires you to either mangle or remove the pickguard to adjust the rod.

I'd suggest finding a few to play, and also try out a few lakland skyline bob glaubs, which are in the same price range.

I saw one at a local store and was excited to give it a try, but the setup was so out of whack that it was unplayable. Might go back and check it out again to see if they have adjusted it yet, or try to play on it anyways. I'm more interested in the jazz bass I think (for a 62 reissue) but the P looked nice. I think I have a thing for White basses with rosewood fretboards and shell pickguards.

A few months ago I picked up an older one ('88 MIA) and I must say it is one of my favorite basses. Attention to detail is excellent (slab board no less) and it sounds wonderful with the current set of groundwounds I have on it, very rich tone. I'm not going to say it's just like having a real '62, but I truly feel I got the best of both worlds - a "new" bass with a real old school vibe in feel and tone at a fraction of the cost of an original.

A finely made instrument - I am VERY pleased with mine.

I just sold this one last week, after 4 very happy years together :).

The sound was everything that I could imagine wanting from a Precision (especially with flats).

I was loathe to sell it, but I had to slim down the collection and I really don't get on well with nitro cellulose neck lacquer (my hands stick to it :(), although it's largely the nitro lacquer on the body, which "lets the tone out" (IMHO ;)).

Great basses, but a bit pricey :hmm:.

Here's some pics, to help fuel the GAS :D:

A Highway One P with a Fender Original '62 pickup gets damn close. I've played mine side by side with the MIA vintage 62 reissue. If you don't like the BadAss, swap it for a vintage bridge. Still way under the cost of the reissue, including mods. As long as you can stand the satin nitro finish...

I played yesterday on it. ]

Maaaan, this is my Holy Grail! I just have to get rid of mine two basses and get some money .... and I can forget about any other basses for the rest of my life :)
Amazing bass, amazing tone, amazing feel... just need to do some minor setup, cause I can't stand high action which the owner loves ;)

Soon I'll post some pics and write few words more.
