This case came with an '87 Squire Bullett bass that I've recently acquired. Obviously not the case that was original to it. Two questions. Any ideas from what years this USA case was used? Also, the straps that keep the lid from falling all the way open are broken and missing. How long were these straps? Thanks.
80's bass case. Is it the Squier Bullet bass with the tele headstock? If so those are actually early 80's not late. This case would be accurate for that time period and looks identical to the one I had with my USA Fender Bullet.
Thanks Johnny. I failed to mention that the bass is a Korean Squire made by Young Chang with Serial #E731737. I took a few shots of it prior to taking it apart and rehabbing it. It sounds great, but needs detailing and a set-up. Since it's Korean, I was assuming that it did not come originally with a USA case.
Yeah that wouldn't come with it. Those cases were used through the 80's and maybe into the early 90's. In the mid-90's they went to a shaped case.
I don't think they would have went into the 90's, as '89 was the intro year for the 'Longhorns', and they always show a different case in for sale ads... I have had a couple of the type in OP, very uncommon for all four feet to be intact, and the top was almost always 'wavey' ... almost certain an '80s case ...
Early 80's is when I recall seeing those. There was a molded case in the late 70's. But the interiors were closer to the rust color of the later 70's wood/tolex cases. I've owned a bunch of the Elite P basses, all with that case there.
The straps are usually the first thing to go on those cases. I have no idea how long they are, mine are long gone, too
I know these cases went into the late 80's and I know that shaped cases came in the mid-90's. I was unsure what they were like between those times.
If you still have any of them, could you give me an idea the length of the straps? I think that I can fix those if I know how long to make them. Thanks.
FWIW. I recently had to re-glue the straps into my 2010 Fender case. I gently removed the styrofoam interior on each edge, one side at a time, slopped some decent, though somewhat noxious adhesive into the bottom of the interior, laid the strap end back in pushed the styrofoam back in firmly & repeated on the other side. Has worked nicely so far to the extent I forgot about it until I saw this thread. Hope this helps.
It does help. If you could tell me approximately how long those straps are would be the last thing that I need to know to repair. The ones on mine are just nubs with the main section gone. Thanks.
If your straps are broken, that's a different story. Mine just simultaneously popped out. You could then sub a sturdier material to replace them. Only guessing but at least 6 inches to tuck into either side plus enough to keep the case open at a 90(?) degree angle.
OP- Try this: Lay the case somewhere flat. Tape one end of a length of string/ribbon/etc. to an edge of the lid, where one of the nubs is. Open the case to 90 deg. or so, hold the string taut, and note/mark the length to other nub. Account necessary extra to allow for gluing into the case. Cut fabric and apply. Worth a shot.
.. the switch from OP case would have taken place in '89, with the intro of the Fender 'Longhorn' basses .. they actually went from the 'sunken' center with logo on the OP case, to the 'raised' center with logo on the Longhorn case, which was used until '94 1/2 (when Longhorn was replaced), and the 'Red Label' bass shaped case was used for American Standards up until the introduction of the American Series in 2000 ... here is a pic of the 'Longhorn' case ... http://classicandcoolguitars.co.uk/sold_basses/longhornjazz.htm
