Any idea on what this may be? The Serial number on the neck plate shows it's a 1954 and that obviously isn't right.

My guess... not a Fender. That is a 60s (or 90s) logo and it lacks identifying marks from either era. The truss has access at both ends of the neck (or the headstock is plugged.) I would think somebody just got the decal. I am not good at spotting the Fullerton hump but I don't see it by that neckplate. This may not be there depending on the era though.
How do you guys even know what to look for?
Theres a local guy selling a P bass, and says its not real but I'm wondering what it is

Sorry to highjack OP; I'm really curious as to how often fender basses are faked.
I didn't know that, but yea that guy is being honest. So when you say counterfeit, do you mean like Chinese crap quality stuff? or is it more like they take a parts bass and try to pass it off as a real fender? That is a counterfeit (and the guy definitely knows it.)
Fenders are counterfeited all the time. You cannot go two weeks without somebody asking "is this Fender real?" You will occasionally get people posting threads about the counterfeit Fenders they make too. Heck, look at the TB classifieds and you will find counterfeit Fenders, they are prolific.

Looks like to could be a Squier Body with a MIM 50s P bass neck (It has the wider string spacing)Any idea on what this may be? The Serial number on the neck plate shows it's a 1954 and that obviously isn't right.
