Fender Bassman 100T Chapter 3

Marc:

So sad to hear about your dad. I sincerely hope he will get through this.

Very happy for you and your amp. Fingers crossed it will stay that way! Keep us all updated on how it goes.

Mine is having its surgery at Fender. By the way: I tried two 410s alittle while ago at a time when mine was working normal. What a great wall of sound! It was too good. Now I need to have one.

Question for you guys:

I'll be going into the studio next week. I'm going to be running direct via my REDDI, but I also want to get my 100t mic'd up. I'm looking for a vintage, b15 type sound. I'll be running it through the matching Fender 1x15 cab.

Any recommendations for settings? I'm assuming 25w on the vintage channel. But how hot should I run the tubes? I know it's subjective to what me and the producer are looking for in terms of sound, but I'd like to at least have a good starting point when I get into the studio. Anybody have any cool ideas or tips?

Here's my bassman 100t, absolutely love this thing!

I just got the just about final mixes back from our last studio trip. A clean channel via the Reddi and a 100t through a vintage Ampeg 810 mic'd. Quite honestly I am so pleased with the result! My settings won 't help you as I solely used the overdrive channel set pretty dirty.

I would say dial a little dirt in. It will give the engineer some options mixed with that clean Reddi signal. I think that is the key to many great bass tones!!

Thanks for that input. This project will be one that allows for a bit of experimentation with mic placements/sounds, so I'm excited about that. I'll definitely let the amp get a little dirty since the direct line will be so clean.

I'll just say that after my 1 experience with the 100T in the studio, I certainly wouldn't ignore its post D.I.. Engineer at the studio has over thirty years experience and multi pieces of platinum hanging on the wall, and he said it was the best D.I. bass sound he'd ever worked with.

Well after about 5 months with no issues, my 100T malfunctioned on a gig this evening. I had this repaired at an authorized servicer last September with the symptom being 2a and 2b bias lights going orange. Tonight the amp sounded great in the first set but during the second set it seemed to be losing power and my guitar player said he was having trouble hearing me. I noticed bias light issue after our second set. I shut it down and switched to my Little Mark 2 for the final set. I am hoping the Fender rep who has been on this thread will reach out to me. I would like to figure out what my next steps are. Amp was purchased from MF in sept 2012.

That's great to hear, but I wouldn't completely discount the fingers hitting the strings and the brain behind them!:)

I am so sorry to hear that. What was your bias light issue this time?

Tubes 2a and 2b have gone red now. I PM'd Rob at Fender. Tried it again this morning and same thing. All this after 5 months with no issues.

Maybe I am wrong, but the issues seems to happen again some time after repair too. My first one did so. So have a couple of others here too. I really hope they will be able to sort these issue out to make the amps reliable for 10-20 and more years.

one last question:

Will i have similar volume to a 500 watt LMII through the same cab? Usually through an 8 ohm 2x10 at practice, i'm at gain = 2 o'clock and volume at noon, with the bass turned up/down for taste. For gigs, i'd either use an 8 ohm mesa 410, or 1 8ohm 2x10 with an 8 ohm 2x12 on the bottom. Should this be loud enough at 100w, or at least comparable?

I know i'm going down an entirely different path here (tube vs ss), which i'm trying to avoid. Just looking for comparisons from those of you lucky enough to have this amp.
