Fender Blacktop Club

Well this is what I am settling with.
My hot-rodded parts Blacktop with some mods. I added a finger pull for a vintage vibe. I use it sometimes too, but not as much as I would on a P-bass.
Strung up with Fender flats: .050 -.100, I have fallen in love with these strings, I wrote a review here:

I have more pics at my NBD page:

Keep on keepin' on!

Well she is fretted again. I guess I am going to have to get another body so I can have one of each!
Decisions, decisions...oh well, keeps me busy I guess.

Modded Blacktop P-Bass

The goal was to look more like a vintage home-brewed Franken-Blacktop... but still a BT, and I wanted the the mods to be subtle. Fully shielded, Sadowsky 500K pots, Fender Precision Special neck (refinished by WillieB), etc. Even though its not fully setup yet... I'm digging it. :bassist:

Call me old-school, but I prefer the foam bottom-up

Well done and welcome! If there is anyone here (who's not a troll) who believes that ExaltBass and "Number 28" should not be joined together in The Deep End, speak now or forever hold your peace.

The by the power invested in me, I pronounce you Bassist and Numeral. You may slappa da bass! :D

Hey, guys,

I'm still here and lovin' my Blacktop Jazz. I posted this on another thread but thought I'd ask here as well.

I'm planning to replace the pickups with Seymour Duncans and figured it'd be good to have a hotter pickup in the bridge position. I was thinking of using the SPB-2 and the SPB-3 pickups. Which is hotter?

Should I go SPB-3 in the neck position and the SPB-2 in the bridge?

It looks like the SPB-2 is hotter but I'm not sure I'm reading the chart on the SD website right.

First off "HOT" doesn't mean better...grumble, grumble...

But what you want is the higher output pickup in the bridge location where the strings create less energy than they do in the neck position. So, spb-2 Neck - spb-3 bridge.

I agree that "Hot" doesn't necessarily equal "Better". "Different" would be more accurate and simpler definition.

With respect, I gotta disagree with your placement suggestion. I recently did the same Quarter-Pounder/Hot installation on a Jazz bass (SJB-3 & SJB-2, specifically). Before I did anything, I contacted Seymour Duncan directly. I asked if the two would compliment each other, and if so, would the "Hot" pickup work better in the bridge postion. Marc "Boomer" Bobonic from their Domestic Sales department wrote me back with this exact quote;

"The SJB-2b HOT is a good choice to match with the Quarter Pound.

In fact it is hotter and warmer in general which will serve you in the brighter, less hot bridge position."

In light of that, I'd recommend going SPB-3 in the neck position and the SPB-2 in the bridge position. However, I won't go as far as to say it's "WRONG!". If somebody thinks the tone they want would be better achieved by reversing them, then by all means, go for it. ;)
