I agree that "Hot" doesn't necessarily equal "Better". "Different" would be more accurate and simpler definition.
With respect, I gotta disagree with your placement suggestion. I recently did the same Quarter-Pounder/Hot installation on a Jazz bass (SJB-3 & SJB-2, specifically). Before I did anything, I contacted Seymour Duncan directly. I asked if the two would compliment each other, and if so, would the "Hot" pickup work better in the bridge postion. Marc "Boomer" Bobonic from their Domestic Sales department wrote me back with this exact quote;
"The SJB-2b HOT is a good choice to match with the Quarter Pound.
In fact it is hotter and warmer in general which will serve you in the brighter, less hot bridge position."
In light of that, I'd recommend going SPB-3 in the neck position and the SPB-2 in the bridge position. However, I won't go as far as to say it's "WRONG!". If somebody thinks the tone they want would be better achieved by reversing them, then by all means, go for it.
