Fender Blacktop Club

I could imagine a Blacktop P or J would look really nice with a black Duff McKagan P-bass neck... :)

Or an Aerodyne neck…

or a Japanese Jazz Bass Special…

or a carbon-fiber-lookin'-headstock on a Power Jazz Bass…

or the black-headstock-with-pearloid-blocks VM Jaguar Special…

The list goes on and on. :crying:

Ok, unexpectedly today I traded for a Blacktop Jazz that so far I am digging. Might as well join the club I say...

I haven't had a chance to try out a Blacktop P yet, so I can't vouch for them. However, like I've said across many threads here on TB, the Jazz is a friggin' monster bass…easily the hottest, most aggressive one I own. THAT I can vouch for!

I searched to no avail. Does anyone know if the Blacktop J has the neck pickup in the "sweet spot" correct with a normal P bass?

Was looking at a Reggie Hamilton with a really hot bridge but I may try to source a body and do a double P build with one of these bodies!

I can't say which, if either, has their neck pickup in the sweet spot. But one thing is for certain, there's a noticeable difference between their placement. Take a close look at both pics from Fender's website. The Reggie's P-pickup is much closer to the bridge.

There's a fellow TB'er, Invalid Link Removed, who had/has a Reggie. He might know something.

I have a Blacktop Tele. The switch needs to be swapped for something more reliable because I rarely get output from the bridge pickup. Otherwise I'm happy with the playability and feel. I might install a pair of Seth Lover humbuckers I have laying around if I get a wild hair.

No need to give me a number... just subscribing to the thread in a long-winded manner. Cheers!

Well had an older abused Blacktop P come straggling into the local shelter. (Waco GC) She has a serious bow in the neck but everything else looked and sounded great. So she's in rehab for the next couple of days where she'll get her neck straightened and a brand spanking new set of Rotosound '77s. Then she'll get to come home to her new forever home where she'll live her days being gently slapped and plucked.

(If the neck is too far gone, I may still buy her for a "reduced" price and replace the neck. I'd love to put on a matching (with my Roger Waters) maple neck if that's the case.)

Pics when I go pick her up on Friday.

I will be joining this club soon. I have a Blacktop Jazz body that I'm using for a fretless project. Just waiting for my tuning machines to get delivered.

Once it's assembled, I'll post some pics.

Hi, new to tb.

I've had my blacktop jazz over a year now and love it. I play in drop C with a pick and power hethis thing is a beast!

Couple of questions though....

Has anyone had issues with the jack input, I had a scratchy one replaced, been fine for a while but now getting a horrid buzz when not playing, so prob need to replace the jack again (only replaced about 6 months ago) both switch craft . Just wondered if anyone else had thus issue?

Also I'm toying with the idea of adding a maple P bass neck to create a kind of mark hoppus style blacktop. I need to work out the measurements etc but wondered if this is a ridiculous notion? Am I missing any potential problems with this?

Any advice appreciated.
P

Does the buzzing stop if you touch the strings, bridge or tuning heads? If so, then what you have is a grounding/shielding problem, not an issue with the jack.

I'm not that familiar with the Blacktops, so somebody else might be able to chime in and say whether these have decent shielding when they arrive from the factory? If not, there are loads of threads on here about shielding your bass :)
