Fender Blacktop Club

what there pieces in body fender blacktop you ?
sorry, I am still curious

The only way to find out would be to remove the finish. I don't think anyone here will do this.

Can I be a member? :)

Here's my Blacktop Jazz that I got at the start of October 2011. Been really happy with it for the past couple years, and have no intention of parting ways.
Although upgrading might be something I'll think about!

In the meantime, dodokns gets #30 and Graeme D gets #31. Welcome aboard the S.S. Blacktop and grab a life jacket, 'cuz these frequencies are going down!!

Just came across this thread, so I'll need to read through it later for some info and tips.

The only upgrade you need is some fender 9050 flats. Yep...

I made some mods to my new Blacktop Jazz and added an entry onto the NBD thread I started. Rather than linking all over the place, I'm just gonna copy/paste it below.

Ciao, y'all!

Modifications Round 1: Cosmetic

I said I'd do some mods, but I decided to start off with some small, cosmetic changes. Nothing too radical nor expensive. First up was changing the pickguard screws from chrome to black. I figured it'd better compliment the Step Two.

Step Two was to attack the pickguard with a Sharpie marker to make it look like a Warmoth black/red/black guard. That alone probably saved me $35+shipping minimum, not to mention time spent waiting for it to arrive AND hoping that the new one fits at all. So, I saved some bucks and got the same result. Easy peasy! :D

I'll post more pics if there's anything else worth documenting.

P.S.: Is it just me or does this little bit o' cosmetic work make it look a bit like the 1960's Batmobile? I think that's kinda cool, right?

Hmmm…Danah Danah Danah Danah BASSMAN! :bassist:

I think I am going to give my Blacktop Precision the red sharpie treatment too. Or maybe another color.

A few tips…because "reasons". ;)

Remove the guard from the body. Kind of a "duh!" step, but worth mentioning.

Once you've got it on, let it dry for a while; say, half an hour or maybe even a full hour. Y'know…just to be sure.

Then take a paper towel, fold it a few times to create a burnishing surface. Rub off the excess dye that didn't adhere to the plastic with mild/moderate force…not enough to warp or break the guard, but enough to take those few microscopic layers off.

Do at least two trips "around the world". By the third, you should get little-to-none off. Unless you plan on coating it with some kind of sealant (I have no idea what that would do), you'll probably have a little stray dye come off to the touch, especially if your fingers are wet.

The great thing about it is, if it starts to noticeably fade, you can go over it again!

Please show some pics when you're done, 'kay? Good luck!

I happen to have a really sexy abalone PG for the Blacktop Jazz - the problem is that I don't actually have a Blacktop. I ordered it for an Aerodyne without first checking that the PU placement is the same - which it's not :(

Interesting reading about the sounds and pickup arrangement. Reversing the P is the way I'd probably go based on comparing my Power Jazz to the Aeros.

Well I ended up selling this bass. That was the original reason I bought it for.
But I almost kept it...lol.

Does anyone know where to buy ready-made Blacktop P pickguards?

I would love to try one out in a different colour, but can't seem to find one nywhere...

Hillerup,
Yes, if you still have it, I would love to see your list. Thank You!

Sorry for the delay...

I got my Hipshot HB7 tuners from this guy on Ebay:

http://stores.ebay.com/HDCustom-Guitar-Supply?_trksid=p2047675.l2563

He has most of the stuff you'll need, but doesn't have the Gotoh bridge but instead he has the Hipshot bridges which are really nice alternatives, which i considered as well.

For other stuff including the Gotoh bridge I used Allparts:

Alternative cheaper black bridge (similar to stock bridge):

For the jack plate I used the recessed football shaped one:

Both online shops should have black pickguard screws, black neck plates, black neckplate screws and black string tree's.

For straplocks I used Schaller straplocks which you can get everywhere , but you could use any other like the ones in the above shops.

For knobs I used black dome knobs, which you can get in both shops.

Other cheap alternative online shops that carry some of the stuff are:

GuitarElectronics:

StewMac:

What I did, was to see which shop had the most parts, throw them in the shopping basket and see what it would add up to including shipping, and then go for the best deal with most parts.

I hope this helps...

You're pretty good at Photoshopping, right?

What about a bunch of Photoshopped Blacktop P's & J's with different guards for all of us to see? ;)

Awww, man…that sounds an awful lot like "work". :spit:

I wouldn't say I'm "pretty good", more like I just kinda know my way around it. But with a little bit of the "W-word", I could mock up a few. It all depends on what source material I have to work with. And yes, between the new pics Fender is uploading (big pics, but you gotta know how to pry them out of their assets directories) and the nice straight-on shots WD uses for their sales pages, I could potentially make a few, barely passable proofs.

My new acquisition from TB-er MasterBass!

Can I haz a number?

Certainly, you can haz number. Number 32 FTW!

And while I'm here being all admin-like, I'll take this opportunity to do a New Year's Update to the Master List.

I hope he gave you a good deal on that one, cause it's missing some vital parts... ;)
I could imagine a Blacktop P or J would look really nice with a black Duff McKagan P-bass neck... :)

That's kinda the idea. I eventually want all black hardware, pickups TBD, and a neck that fits what I want to do (also TBD).

I'll probably make my own pickguard for it, but I'll wait to see what hardware I can gather for it first.
