Fender Classic 50's P pickup

Nope. It’s the pre-2012 American Standard pickup. Someone around here will have the part number. The PV ‘58 is one for the ages. The pre-2012 AmStd OTOH is what @JimmyM calls “the worst P bass pickup ever made.” I wouldn’t go that far, but there are way better P pickups IMHO.

EDIT: It just occurred to me: the actual worst P pickup ever made is a tie between the older MIM Fender P and the DiMarzio Model P. Both ceramic magnets, both brittle and crappy-sounding as heck. (IMHO of course.)

I’m suprised to hear this. Videos I’ve heard of the roadworn 50s precision basses sound incredible

Yeah I have a feeling the current Vintera pickups are the closest I’ll get.

How about the Pure Vintage 63 as an alternative? How would that work on a 50s inspired, maple board p bass?? Would they be much different to the 50s pickups in the roadworns/Vintera??

SD SPB-1 + Broken in Flatwound + .1UF cap.

If you are aggressive pick player with bright roundwound bass string, sure the PV63 are great match.

Hmm. I was referring to the so-so pickup in the Classic ‘50s P bass. Not certain that the Roadworn had the same pickup. Might have been something nicer. Anybody know for sure?

I’ve heard the classic 50s and they sound good to me. Dunno why everyone thinks they’re so-so. All though I think the roadworns do sound that little bit nicer but that could be down to having a nitro body and neck instead of poly??

I don’t play with a pick. I’m almost always a fingerstyle man. Sometimes I slap. And my fingerstyle isn’t that aggressive either.

I could be using old rounds or fender 9050l.

And it’ll be paired with a maple board.

Does that change things?

Since the PV63 are around market and price are right , worth a try yourself.
I been use PV63 on my previous china made Squier CV60P along with Ti flat, i am fingerstyle man too, this combination just sound beautiful to me. The warmth vibe on PV63 mix with unique woody MID Voice of Ti flat, lot of nice tone tweaking out from .1UF cap. Need to mention that overall tone are more to old school type .

Here’s mine. Dunno much about the pickup but honestly didn’t really like it.

Just quoted to tell you that I find your YouTube channel very informative and entertaining. Great stuff!

Is that the same pickup in the old “classic series” MIM P basses? I have one that I got in a trade and I’m curious if it’s worth installing in a MIC Classic Vibe P bass. I actually prefer the original (made in China) classic vibe p pickup to a lot of what’s out there, but I have two of them now and it may be redundant to have two p basses with the same pickup.
