Fender Custom Classic Jazz

I purchased a new 2008 American Standard Jazz bass. After a good setup, it's a very nice bass. Fit and finish is fine and it has a nice tone.

I've been looking at this Fender Custom Classic Jazz bass:

And I'm wondering how it compares to the American Standard. I can get one second hand for about $500 more than the new price of the American Standard. Worth the extra money?

I realize the standard is passive and the custom is active, with different pickups, hardware, etc. I'm just curious if the difference is subtle or dramatic?

The tone is subjective but overall the CS is just more refined... Body contours, neck shape and finish, fit & finish are just "Custom Shop" if that makes sense... The 08's are good though so I don't know if the CS would be worth it anymore.

I own both and here's the difference:
The CC C/S bass has a smaller body
smaller neck profile
22 frets
active electronics
"custom noiseless" pups (they do sound different than noiseless imho)
I also own a couple of Fender DLX type basses, An FMT V with SCN pups, a Victor Bailey with "noiseless"pups" and I can tell you as any owner of a CC C/S jazz will tell you, it's an awesome bass and on a different level completely then the MIA standard bass!

I ordered the cobalt blue one they had at Bass Emporium. It arrived today. And it it beautiful. You guys are right. The tone is different. Not quite as growly as the American Standard. I think I like it better. They're both good though. I'm amazed at how good that 2008 Am Standard jazz bass really is. I hate to return it, but I can't keep both. I think I'll be keeping the Cobalt Custom Classic Jazz. Sweet bass!

Nice score, that is a hot looking bass... I like the custom classics. congrats

In discovering the realization that I am not, or will never be, an extended range bass player, I traded a Smith five string for a four string, Custom Classic Jazz (thanks Tom). It's white / rosewood with the tort pickguard.

I've been playing bass for over 25 years and this is my first Fender. The closest I've come was my first bass; a Squire Precision. After that it's been mostly high end. It's kind of like the long way home.

Right now I need to get the feel and tone sorted out; I've only had the bass for about 15 hours as of right now. For example, the active bass and treble controls seem to have a lot less impact on the tone than the mid control. Looking at the specs, I think it's due to the way the pre amp is voiced. I'll have to try it played out to see if this is a good thing or not.

What I can say is that the quality is right up there with many of the other high end basses I've played.

More to come,
