I went into a local music shop today and noticed this

Do they make this in a five string, I've been unable to find one.

I liked it because it had a much smaller body like a P-lyte. I own a P-lyte but again it is 4 string and they only made those in 4.

The 5-string version was discontinued several years ago (I want to say 2008?) which is a shame because it was one amazing bass that added a unique "something" with it's Dual Coil bridge pickup that you didn't find in either a standard Precision or a P/J. They don't pop up all that often on eBay, and when they do they typically sell for a decently high price. One of my concepts for a Custom Bass is to put the P/DC pickup configuration & Active Preamp in a 5-string Jazz Bass body, as I'm far more comfortable ergonomically playing a Jazz rather than a Precision.

well that sucks. I can't stand the large body Fender's. It is very hard to tell from a picture and I have looked around but am unable to tell if they make anything in a five string with this size of body.

Anyone know if they make anything with that body but in a 5 again? Don't really need the pup configuration, I'm pretty handy with a router!

Used P5 Deluxe's show up in the TB For Sale all the time. Do a search. They go quickly too. I have had 2 of them. Sold one in about 3 hours!!! Still have my first choice. A 2006 P5 Deluxe in Cherry Sunburst with a Maple fretboard! Beautiful bass.
There was a Trans Green one floating around for a while. Pick one up, you will not be disappointed!

Do all Fender Deluxe models have this smaller body? Or just the Am Dx? I don't really care if it has two Jazz pups I just like the smaller body.

Relatively sure it's just the American Deluxe Jazz & Precisions, as they were going for the "Modern" J and P-bass market which tend to have 7/8ths-sized/"Dinky" downsized bodies for better reach on 22 or 24-fret necks... although the Standard body with modern "fixins" (Pickups, Electronics, Body Chambering, Neck Reinforcements, Exotic woods, etc) have seem to made a "comeback" in the last decade or so.

I'd love a cherry sunburst one, either 4 or 5-string, preferably rosewood board. I missed a 5-string (w/maple board) months ago. I also like the older models better (with 9V electronics, noiseless pickups and Schaller tuners, I am one of the few people who can't stand those little Hipshot Ultralights, I like heavy tuners), though don't know if they came in cherry sunburst already. Sunset orange would be nice too. I also missed a mint Fender Gold Elite II P in cherry sunburst which I also love. Man all these are hard to find. It is tough to find a '98-'04 US P in ebay (Germany) anyway.

Well that stinks, don't think I want to throw down the cash for an American model.

Thanks for the reply

I played that bass years ago. It was a teal blue color. I'm not much of a P fan. I prefer J's but I have to tell ya if I were going to buy a P bass that would be the one. It sounds awesome and it's really versatile. It's probably the only bass that I would own with active electronics as well. Really a superb instument.
