Fender finally offers stealth string retainer for sale

I have several Fenders. None of them have any problems that would necessitate using this thing. If you wind your strings on the tuner correctly, the break angles are fine. So, to me, it's $21 for a non-problem.

I suppose the string retainer increases the pressure and friction on the string nut making the string nut wear faster and increasing it's breaking probability. A metallic string nut would be advisable...

They are designed only for tuners that use a threaded bushing to secure it to the headstck. The stealth retainers don't work with tuners that use press fit bushings.

Where can I get one of these that will work for the A string on a MIM jazz bass?

I put one on my USA Geddy Jazz last week, A string, which has press not screw bushings, that were larger than the center hole of the retainer. I actually reamed the center hole of the retainer with a drill press and a step bit. When assembled, there is still potential for the string pressure to raise the bushing and retainer, but I’ve been watching for that and they haven’t pulled up any so far.

I don't think that would be necessary as the D and G strings have a retainer already, and the plastic nut that Fender basses come with don't seem to be affected by that. I have a 1968 Precision Bass with the original nut, and it isn't worn out. Not even close. I don't use this stealth retainer thing, but it doesn't change the angle of the string any more than the stock string retainer for the D and G strings.

I've got a buzzy A string on a Deluxe PJ-seems to be in the nut area. Bought one of these but discovered (as someone pointed out earlier), it doesn't fit on tuners w press-fit bushings (i.e. the ones that don't have a nut on top). Anyone got any alternative ideas?

A Gibson version would auto-detune your bass and cause the headstock to snap off. But, on the positive side, it will fit your lifestyle.

Wrap the string lower on the post (more wraps).
