You are right again, I failed to correctly recall the ad.

But hey, just to belabor the the point further -- the stock Fender button retainer catches TWO strings, yes? D&G

I would pay it. I got one from Fender for free back 3 or 4 years ago.
Yeah, there are cheaper solutions. But 22 bucks isn't that much really. If you have a vintage fender and want to fix the A string design flaw without hurting the resale value of the bass it's your only option.
It's the most effective B string retainer I've found, and not having to drill holes is a plus.
Pretty weak argument - who pays full retail these days? I paid under $50 shipped for three last year.
Mine arrives in about a week.
How much is the one you sell?
I have several Fenders. None of them have any problems that would necessitate using this thing. If you wind your strings on the tuner correctly, the break angles are fine. So, to me, it's $21 for a non-problem.
Just what a Fender style bass needs, more metal stuff on the headstock... By the way, only $17.95 on Bass parts resource.

I don't believe how wound up some people are getting about these. It's a string retainer, people - use it or don't use it.
I just installed one Fender Stealth String Retainer on my 2012 Fender AS P5 and it significantly increased my B-String tension. This stealth string retainer is an above and beyond improvement over what can be achieved from simply/only properly winding the B-string on the tuning post. The B-String now feels similar to the E-String. Great product and I only wish I thought of it first. Ernie Ball Flats (Blue Package, not of the newer Cobalt variety) strings with a .130 gauge B-String.
I've got a 60th Anniversary as well which came with this little doodad. I thought it was cool and then thought about it no more until I saw this thread. Now I feel kinda special.

I suspect he's describing the same thing I found - that using a stealth retainer on the B of a P5 gives the B a similar feel to the E. Basically, more tension for the fingers and less flub for the tone. I converted one of my P5s first, and the comparison was surprising - so I did all three of them.
In my case, yes - at least for the first position. Not sure why the fretted notes are affected, but they subjectively are. I experienced a noticeable tension increase when compared side by side with another one of my P5s wearing the same strings. Not a lab test, but I could easily tell the difference.
