Just put TI flats on mine. Still sounds huge but just a bit less zingy. Those stock Fender strings really aren't half bad. But my fingers prefer flats!

I rub the Jazz neck down with 'Ax Wax' every couple of months to keep the fretboard from drying up too much, it seems to do the trick
So you really need (as usual) to go look at one to be sure you know what it is and what it plays like. Sounds like the spec. - hardware, weight, neck finish etc. - is varying with each FSR run.

So what is the cheapest regular American made Precision - used to be the Highway 1. Although that had a hybrid production process wherre it was partly done in Baja. So not completely USA only.
That would be the Honeyburst American Special Precision from GC. On sale for $699 and very well regarded! (do a search on TB) I thought the price was going back up today but online at least, still the same.

Man, Im normally not much of a natural finish fan, plus i usually prefer maple fretboards.. But I absolutely love those MIM ash bodied jazz basses!
