I doubt anyone has any idea how many were made. Black and Fiesta seem to be the rarest custom colors.
While guitar players talk alot about Cunetto instruments I never really hear them talked about in the bass community so I am not sure how they would compare.
Here are my two:

Your P-bass looks to be in a lot better shape than mine. I'm actually getting ready to take you some pictures to post in this thread.
That thing is beautiful GE! It looks well loved. I've only had mine about a year, and the previous owner must have kept it under the bed. Give me a couple more years with it

I've had mine now for almost 10 years! (Its a little crazy to think of it though) Mine was a closet keeper too! It had all the case candy and covers when I bought it. Its all since long lost. I bought those replacement covers about 5 years ago.

Beautiful bass. Mine has the red and black bobbins too, and I think that is common for Fullerton Js.
It is my understanding that only the earliest quasi-prototype Fullerton Js had all gray bobbins. They are truly wonderful basses. Mine absolutely nails the early 60s Jazz bass feel and sound!
FWIW, I bought a '57 re-issue Stratocaster V000138 brand new when they were introduced. It was a 2-tone sunburst which looked right, but lacked the v-neck, and the body was rife with fill-holes. Tweed case was included.
It had some personality, but overall, it did not grow on me. I ended up selling it after about 2 years. Loved the finish...to look at...from a distance.
In '99 I purchased a brand new surf-green Mexi-'57 that does have a v-neck (see below) and compared to my friend's real '57, is about as close in contours, headstock shape, and weight. Of course, it isn't worth as much as one from that era...but it feels right, is well put together and sounds great.
It seems like they got the basses right, but my experience with a strat from that era was a let down.

INteresting post. It could bethat your Strat was just too early.I know of a guy, he might post here but I "know" him from another forum. He has a 57 P that's as early as anyone has ever seen. Has a V000xxx S/N like your Strat, and it's is not like most Fullerton RIs.
As I recall, it has a poly, not nitro finish, does NOT have the raised A poles, has jumbo frets, and plastic insulated wires rather than cloth.
All of these things are "wrong", if you will.
I have a feeling there may have been some real early RIs that were close to prototype in nature, but were released for sale. This is pure speculation on my part, FWIW.
I have seen too, that the logo on the very early AVS P Basses (up to late '82) was not quite right as well.
It's hardly rewarding to note that...at the time, they got it half right. The Strat's pup pole pieces was also something they did get right.
Since there is a recorded history, more products to choose from than ever, as well as a better informed buying public, we have much better choices and quality now than we did then. /hijack over.
So you are talking about a few months? What was wrong with them? I have never seen a Fullerton with a funny logo. Starting in the late 80's into the early 90's they put the logos in the wrong place.

Just for the record, I'm not knocking these instruments at all, I was just pointing out a trivial detail for discussion.
I love the Fullerton reissues. I just sold a 1983 '57, which was an accurate reissue in every way, to fund a 1983 '62 reissue. I'll post pics once i get my hands on it.

I just realized that mine has a gold spaghetti logo. It is original and dated Jan 1983.

Now that I think about it....there were some weird etchings in the finish on the headstock that were cleaned up recently. They may have sprayed the whole headstock lightly with a tinted nitro. That may have just yellowed up the logo.
Just a guess, I am not sure.
