Fender Highway One series discontinued?

I'd read they were being replaced by the American Special series. When I looked at their UK site last week they had the Special and Highway One both listed, but I see the Highway One's now been removed so that would seem to confirm it.

The later model highways had (have) 4 things going for them, and people feel differently about each one.

  • MIA (Ok, most everyone likes MIA)
  • Price just $200 higher than the MIM Standard (And $400 lower than the MIA Standard - OK, most everyone likes a better bargain, and I'm not even going into the insanity of the pricematch extravaganza from earlier this year.)
  • Badass II Bridge (People love em, hate em, or swapped em out and sold them to recoup part of their investment.)
  • Nitro paint (but limited color availability, and like the badass, people either loved it or were indifferent.)

The American Special's selling points
  • Maple FB on some models
  • "Thinner' C shaped Neck
  • $200 more in price than the Highway One, $200 lower than the American Standard

Lots of people have show love for the American Special around here, but I never experienced anything other than mediocrity (But then again, they were in GC, so it could have used a setup.)

For the price, I'd still say the Highway One wins out between the two.

Oh, and in my reply above, I didn't bother mentioning the greasebucket, since they both have them. But then again, Bongolation said he got a Highway One without it, factory packaged. And they both have the graphite support rods.

IMO, no great loss. ;)

I didn't really think much of my 2006 HWY One (the black one), that is, until I started recording with it. So, if I could only have two of the basses pictured, the HWY One would be one of them.

Sorry, but I so disagree with that. Dollar for dollar the HWY One's gave you the best bang for the buck of any of their instruments. Nitro body, graphite support rods, Badass bridge and a great playing neck. I had a transparent blonde one it was a great bass. Nice and light with that classic jazz sound.

Personally I think it is a bad move on Fenders part discontinuing them.

from a value standpoint the hwy ones were fenders best bang for the buck , I was lucky enough to get in on the 441 hwy one deal , keep your eyes peeled for bargains going forward , the finish buffs out real nice if you dont like matte nitro here is a body I rubbed to a orangepeel shine with maguiars car wax paired with an american vintage neck
