Fender Jazz - A string making vibration sound

I have a MIM Fender Jazz with a Fender bigger mass bridge (forgot actual name) and the open A string makes a vibration sound at the bridge area. It is not fret buzz. I checked the little Allen screws at the saddle and the are not loose. I just put new strings on and still vibrating.

I also (thinking it could be the intonation spring) put soft pressure on the spring with my fingers. Doesn't make any difference.

*Adequate break angle at nut? 3+ wraps on machine head posts?

*Saddles parallel with bridge base plate?

Open A string implies the problem is at the other end - that the string isn't wound far enough down on the tuner post to hold it down at the nut. If it sounds fine when you fret a note on the A string, that's absolutely your cause.

If it still rattles when you fret a note, you probably have one saddle height screw that's loose.

Good point and I believe you're correct. I have noticed that my windings are less than 2 full wraps. I've been cutting my strings 1 & 1/2 post lengths but I think I may need to change that.

On the Open A string thing, I had to install an A string retainer on the jazz I used to own to get enough of an angle going.

Cheap fix - just a few dollars for the part, and easy peasy to install.

Good point and I believe you're correct. I have noticed that my windings are less than 2 full wraps. I've been cutting my strings 1 & 1/2 post lengths but I think I may need to change that.

My technique is to cut 4 inches past the post where the string is going, but…,bend the string before cutting.

When you put the string in the tuner, there’s a bend where the string comes out and starts winding around the post - a little less than an inch from the end where you cut it. You do that bend, and then you cut the string. That’s a bit of insurance to make certain the windings don’t loosen on you.

Yes bend the string before cutting. On my A strings I have 4 full wraps at least. Right to the bottom of the tuner capstan. E string has at least 3, and also down to the bottom. The D and G have a retainer so two full wraps is enough

Could be two of the bridge pieces just close enough to buzz. My old Jazz used to do that sometimes. I stuck a piece of paper between the two saddles to stop it buzzing.
