Fender Jazz Bass Special - Circa 1984-87

Blending? I guess you could do that either way but it gives you the ability to do quick changes if need be. Sort of like a les paul. Also, if you shut off the volume on one of the pickups, the switch acts as a kill switch. Great for a quick mute if needed.

Does anyone have any opinions on this Bass? I have had it since the mid 80's and no matter what newer bass I buy, I always seem to want to go back to it. Currently have a Geddy sig Jazz bass and that is what I play most, but something about my old Special that I love. Much lighter and seems to have just as good of tone as my Geddy. Just put some Chromes Flats on it, so I have a different sounding bass to go too, but thinking it should maybe be my main bass. I did add active P/U to this 20 years ago, and modified the back of the body for the battery.
Any thoughts on this Bass?

My very first bass was one of these! White fretless... wish I hadn't sold it....!

I have a bunch of Fenders, and I really love this bass model, as well. (Mine's an '86 Candy Apple Red one with original parts--I prefer passive). Another awesome bass that is hard to find that is passive is the Fender HM.

Is the HM the 3-pickup model from the '90s?
I only played one (with a weird crinkly-metal finish) but loved it.

Hi, Winston.

Yes, the HM is the basswood fender from about 1989 - 1991 what has the three single coils and the 5-position Strat selector switch (2 knobs--volume & tone). It has a neck as thin, if not thinner, than that of the MIJ Fender Precision Lyte Deluxe (just traded my P Lyte Deluxe to get the MIJ Jazz Bass Special--I prefer passive basses). My HM is all-black and is a closet classic. I am always in the market for a beat-up HM passive (they made an active model, as well).

My '86 CAR MIJ Jazz Bass Special came back from my luthier with minor fret-leveling, an adjustment, & pot blowouts. It is all-original and plays great. My luthier actually prefers Fenders with the Jazz neck and the 7.25" fretboard radius.

I know that BassGod76's Jazz Bass Special is going to kick some you-know-what when he is done with it!

Both the HM and JBS are great for cutting through the mix!!

So it's like $100 for the set from basspartsresource for the Hipshots. Man I wish any of the places I could actually get discounts carried them.

Schaller makes some too but I can't find them in a black version.

It's interesting that they come up as fitting years 67-82, but they didn't start making these basses till after that. Did they just ship their overstock of tuners to Japan??
