Fender Jazz Bass

Hi, does anyone know if this is a real or fake Jazz Bass? From the headstock and ID its from Made in USA and from 2003. Still kind of on the fence on whether its real or fake. Nut on the neck is damaged and its gonna have to be replaced too.
Thanks

I know nothing about Fenders and logos and real or fake ones, aside from what I have been reading on TB, but that looks very odd.

The tuners, what's going on there??
The logo is in a position I have never seen before.
The font of the letters, never seen those.
The bridge pickup is so close to the bridge.
The bridge.
That "extra" string retainer.
The broken nut.
The ridiculous routing of the bridge pickup.

Google "Fender USA Jazz Bass 2003" and see for yourself.

Stay away from that one.

Fonts are wrong and extra string tree. Tuners are poorly placed and don't look the correct shape. Although I imagine the extra string tree was added after to try and fix a poor set up.

The serial number would mean (if it were real) that it's a 2003. But I never saw a Fender with the serial number stamped by itself close to the edge like that. The headstock contour seems exaggerated from a real Fender, the body shape seems exaggerated from a real Fender. Tuners aren't spaced consistently, something wrong with the bridge pickup cut out. The bridge isn't even mounted like a Fender bridge, more like an Ibanez bridge which maybe is a clue to what it actually was. Body could have been a lawsuit era body? Fender never used that style knob on their US made Jazz basses. Pickguard only has 9 screws, Fender's have 10, should be four along the bottom.
Honestly just nothing is right.

IMHO, it's a fake. The Fender logo on the headstock looks different (different fonts, spacing, etc.). The serial number is in a strange location/position on the back of the headstock. The tuners are not evenly spaced. The bridge pickup is too close to the bridge (70's jazz basses had this, but not since then). Body shape/contour looks off. There is more that doesn't seem right. Either the seller is misrepresenting the bass, or they got duped with they bought it because they didn't know better (and still don't).

  • Serial number checks out as being from 203-2004 but I agree with the comment another poster made about it's placement. I have a Precision from about this time (2004-5) and the serial number on mine is more to the middle of the back of the headstock, not along the edge as you see it in these photos. My serial number is also much smaller print than this. Taken alone this makes it very likely fake.
  • Fender did use white pickguards with sunburst finishes in the early 2000's so that is period appropriate.
  • The tuners are all wrong for a 2003-2004 Fender. Tuners from this period were partially enclosed with the classic F logo on them and they were fitted without screws drilled into the back of the headstock as you see here. They were cast with posts that were fitted into pre drilled holes so no screws were necessary in the back.
From there I have to agree that most everything else looks very suspect. Other posters have covered this very well so I won't bother repeating their findings.

That thing is a mess. Recommending a hard pass.
