Fender JP 90 club?

Just traded for one. Pretty nice bass- neck is good, a few dings but otherwise, in great condition. It's like having the sound of MIA Fender bass but with the slim neck and weight of an Ibanez.

Welcome Aboard there Maxdusty,
You will absolutely love the way these sit in the mix. I love mine. When I got mine I had a lot of very heavy basses so she was very appreciated. We were doing a lot of 4 plus hour gigs and my back was breaking, then along came Dixie and no more back pain. I hope you enjoy playing your JP90 as much as the rest of us do. Stop in from time to time and rest a spell and let us know how you are getting along.

Thanks wolfmancharlie. Absolutely love the bass- it sounds great, nice neck and yes, the weight is truly a blessing. :) I know some didn't care for the appearance of the bass, didn't know what to think of it but the look kind of grows on you. Best bass for the money I've bought to date. The bass sounds much better than my MIM Fender P Bass upgraded with a Seymour Duncan pickup- I was prepared to upgrade the pickups but I don't even see the need to at this point. Awesome and highly recommend giving this bass a chance if you see one.

My first bass was and is a JP-90.

Decided to string it BEAD back in 2003 before it was a "thing".

Going to take the neck into my tech soon to see if there's anything we can do as it's a bit funky now. Anyone know if you can slot a standard Fender neck into the pocket on these.

I have one of these im selling. I hate the "Jetsons" looking pick guard ! But every time I have played out with it I get the biggest compliments on my sound !
That's one thing about this bass, regardless of whether the look is something you like or hate ( I happen to like the look of it), the bass just sounds great all at a nice comfortable light weight. I'd buy it from you if I wasn't so broke now. :)

Perhaps it helps that my eyesight isn't the best, I don't really notice the pickguard. You're right, they are way undervalued for what you're getting in return. A great sounding instrument and if you're into headstock labels (I'm not), "Fender, Made in USA".

I'm also curious to see if anyone has replaced the JP90 with a standard Fender neck. Nothing wrong with mine currently, but just wondering. There are some JP-90 necks on ebay currently. One is currently listed at $150

Black on Black makes the pick guard substantially less noticeable IMO. IIRC I didn't really notice how odd the pickguard shape was until I owned it for a while and someone else pointed that out.

Found this photo online. This is what someone did with their JP-90. This is I guess how it would look like with a more "normal" pickguard. I actually like the one on it, but this is interesting and probably could have boosted sales had Fender offered something like this aftermarket.

I'm sure that would have boosted sales a lot. I know that Fender was trying to put out something they thought would compete with Ibanez ,at the time, but lucky for us it failed. Got mine a couple years back for 350 . Couldn't do that with any other MIA Fender from 1990. Mine has found a permanent home and if I were still gigging id pick up another, but now I'm on a break, because of work, and I'm building a custom bass . This one will probably be my last.
But as long as I'm on TB there is still a chance I'll get yet another.LOL

One thing I'm wondering about the necks, it seems like the older models with the low serial numbers have the necks with no stripe on the back and truss rod adjustment at the neck cavity. I've seen more of these older models around that are still okay in comparised to the more recent models with the stripe on the back and truss rod adjustment at the headstock. I don't know if these striped necks are early MIM necks shipped to Corona. Early MIM Fender necks were always less stable compared to true US necks and retain their stripe to this day. Perhaps the early models have true MIA necks? I'm probably completely off-base, but just something I've noticed looking at more JP-90s - there's another JP90 bass available in my local area, a black one with the "older" neck that I'm GASsing for now.
Just played my JP90 an hour ago, and can't get over how great it feels and sounds. I have a MIM Fender P bass that is feeling a little vulnerable right now that it might be on the trading block soon and replaced by another JP-90. :)
