Fender JP 90 club?

LOL! Reggie, you posted this on my 60th birthday! I just picked one of these up, black body, black pickguard, the electronics need some TLC, but the neck is good and it is LIGHT!! This will definitely be my go to bass for 4 hour gigs where I need to stand on stage instead of sitting. I love my '62 Reissue Pbass w TI Jazz Flats for gigs and '88 MIJ Pbass with Rio Grande pups and TI Jazz Flats for recording direct into PT, but my lower back can not take the weight of those beasts for a 4 hour standing gig anymore.

Does anyone know what the recommended string gauge on these is for both rounds and flats? I want to go .45 to 1.05 if the neck can take a standard set. I am a diehard fan of the '60s and early '70s Pbass and Jbass sounds with flatwounds on them. I tried to like EMGs with roundwounds on the MIJ Pbass for 10 years and kept wondering why I couldn't find the tone I wanted, (think Dee Murray, Leland Sklar). I went back to flats with passive pickups and call me old school, but that IS the bass tone I like. The TIs are just a little too slinky to play fast with the right hand and the Deep Talkin' La Bellas have the punch in the gut I like, but not the "point" attack that the TIs have.

I am willing to try rounds again if that works on this bass; my main concern is the neck is fine now, but I don't want to put anything on it with too much tension if the necks are prone to warping.

For what it's worth, I initially strung my JP90 with .045"-.105" GHS Precision flats and used it that way for a couple of years. Didn't have to make a truss rod adjustment and there was never any perceptible change in the neck over time. For the last year or so it has been sporting .045"-.105" D'addario XL nickel rounds and I can see no difference in the neck orientation (compared to the GHS flats) whatsoever.

Without knowing for sure I'd bet JP90's came stock with .045"-.105" strings stock.

Pickups got traded out for a Dimarzio pair, input jack (which came cracked through the original plastic pick guard) got rerouted to the more stable location on the side, and the toggle pickup selector got removed in exchange for a volume/volume/tone configuration.

How do you like the v/v/t mod? Is the blending worth the cost? Looking at one of these today, or a MIM P.

Just found this JP90 locally for $399 with ohsc! Great bass what a sleeper.

Way better quality than a mim Fender these are a bargain. What is the asking price for the one you are considering? I read back a bit I agree 700 is to much, I probably over paid a bit but it was nice and it was there.

350 at guitar center, no case. Played it today. Great neck, body has some chips. It is white',don't love the color. Asked if a precision pick guard would work, they were not sure. Maybe just take it off. Loved the tone.

Greetings!

I got myself a a black JP90 body with a custom painting on the back side about year or so ago but did not manage to mate it with a neck (MIM 70s´ Jazz with bullet truss rod and blocks) until today... First impression: most likely a keeper. Very light and plays really nice! Jury still out regarding the 70´s MIM JB neck though. - Would prefer getting a real JP90 neck for it but alas it looks the part and plays nice so why not settle for this...

Will swap the orig black & cracked PG with a nice 3 ply white pearloid one to match the blocks on the necks and probably swap the worn bridge with either Hipshot vintage or Hipshot B style in brass to get a bit more heft to body´s side of the bass. Probably will swap the orig PU´s for EMG GZR set whilst at it also.

Cool, ergonomic and very unique and good to play bass - what´s not to like?!? :bassist:

Ok, so mine came in. Had neck bow and scratchy pots. Took it right in for a set up. Waiting to hear back.

Bought it off Ebay, was worried about it. I have two weeks to return it if I have to. The Ebay seller is willing to pay half of the set up, which seems fair.

The body is great on the bass. If they neck and pots can be corrected, I will be pleased.
