Fender MIM road worn 60' J bass

let's see, i see people spending over $1000 on fender copies made in indonesia. i see people spending $2K+ on fenders from the 70s that are, as a whole, arguably worse than anything coming out of mexico or china today. i see people spending $5K+ on fenders that have been "road worn" by others. who cares as long as they're happy with their purchase?

Hard to argue with that - particularly the commend about Fenders from the dark decade of the '70's.... (I'm still amazed Fender "reissued" a 3 bolt J bass!)

Please do, and report back. I will do the same this weekend. I have only looked, but not yet played--BTW, they have been kind of hard to find in Kentucky and Texas in the last few weeks. Haven't been in CA or NY for a bit. Soon. :cool:

I played one of the P-basses recently. It was nice, has a very nice feel to the neck, no sharp frets and the edge of the board is very smooth.

Sounded just like a good P should too. That's the only one I've laid hands on but it was definitely a good deal better than any of the previous generation Mexican built basses, and I've tried plenty of those.

BUT...it's worth noting that Fender's Standard line has been "upgraded" on the current model, and to my eyes, ears, and hands they are identical to the Road Worns, minus the distressed finish of course.

So much so that I bought one and I'm loving it.

I'm not saying the Road Worns aren't worth it if you dig that look, but at roughly half the cost the Standards are looking like a real bargain by comparison, even with the recent price increase.

You guys make the assumption that anyone who buys these instruments gives a rip about you or anyone else's opinion. You might be giving yourself a bit too much credit. Most people don't buy things for you to look at; they buy it so they can play it. I haven't gotten on a stage and cared about anyone's opinion of my instrument since my very early 20's. The name calling is cute, though.

I'm not bothered what people think about my opinion, but isn't a forum an open invitation to voice one's opinion? And isn't this the thread to do it in with regards to what's been said?

I have no intention of continually revoicing my opinion, either. I can't help it if other members choose to quote me.

For me the issue was never style or posiness. Everybody poses when they think they look cool. All I said was that for me, personally, the concept itself is lame, not cool. I have no intention of pressing the issue.

Sorry if I offended anyone, too. As I said, I never meant to flame or troll.

One thing that just came to mind re the MIM RoadWorn Jazz bass which I've only just remembered was how cool the checking/weathering of the paint job looked on the front of the bass side cutaway - I was really blown away by that.

Other nice details were the indent line from the bridge pickup cover (not supplied) and the muted colour of the tort pickguard and the realistic pick scratches and swirling.

The only unrealistic looking thing was the screw holes for the "missing" hardware (p/up cover, bridge cover & thumbrest). The screw holes were too clean, and I'm guessing no screws have ever been fitted into the holes...

No, not according to Morgan, or the Fender website.

I'm guessing it is a cost saving meaure and also a nod towards "realism" in that a lot of players generally removed the hardware anyway as it got in the way.

Personally, I love the look and have pimped my P bass and 75 Jazz reissue up with the correct covers and thumb rests, but I would leave them off on this bass as the covers would obscure some of the relic detail... If you do want the look you can always pick up reliced/oxidised covers etc online at quite a reasonable price.

Another thing I just remembered was how organic feeling the MIM Jazz bass was - very light weight and very resonant. I also picked up a new American Standard and it just felt different - sounded fantastic, but very different. Not as organic or comfy/broken in feeling.

As a previous poster suggested these things seem to be targetted squarely at the Nash market. Even if they are MIM, they are still "genuine" Fender and they're a few hundred dollars cheaper than a Nash, even if they aren't as individual as a Nash.

Re the MIM RoadWorn Jazz bass - by way of disclaimer, I went into the music store to drop off and then pick up my fretless Stingray. I had absolutely no interest at looking at or buying anything at all.

Quite frankly I was already quite prejudiced AGAINST the Roadworn series, based on my initial perception of photos and other people's opinions etc.

I was really surprised to be impressed by the bass. Truthfully, this thing is giving me G.A.S. big-time. Maybe a cold shower will do the trick?
