Only if you're quite proficient and "precise" when you play fretless. Otherwise it becomes an Imprecision bass iirc.

It's a 34" custom instrument made for Dave Meros by Ed Roman. All four pickups are traditional single-coil J's, with two in the '70s Jazz positions and two in the 4003 positions, which lets Dave easily switch between the two very different tonalities on the fly. It sounds awesome.

Then why the decades long single coil configurations? If you put the J pups on another shape body it still is then a jazz bass. I think the body shape has nothing to do with the pursuit of the "jazz tone", but just to add a "difference to the whole package. So body shape to me is not the answer.

My wife drives a Trailblazer SS. It has tuned sport suspension, low profile tires, and a Corvette engine in it. Is it a Trailblazer or a Corvette?
Body style indicates it is, in fact, a Trailblazer. We would not be allowed to join a Corvette club, although we can hang with most of them in the quarter mile.
