Thanks for the replies on the buzz question. Lets hope it's EMI but just to be sure i will let the local technician have a look on the grounding and such.

Also more on the weight issue many have. I mean indeed it is not the lightest but is it really that bad? I can't say mine is super heavy, right now i haven't even got myself a wider/thicker strap. Currently using a default ghs strap and it is fine. I need to weigh mine properly, maybe i got one under 10 pounds.

Here's my Modern Player 5. Got it end of September. Plays great, sounds huge, weighty (don't have a scale).

I decided to splurge on some mods, and ending blowing almost $20 to turn it into this:

I had some Chrome knobs sitting around, I spent ~$8 on a set of 5 string inlay stickers from Link Removed (A+ customer service), and ~$8 on a Black Jazz plate off Amazon. The stickers have held up to hours of playing, including gigs and rehearsals and still look great.

At some point, I need to replace the tuners, as the stems are long to the point where they press against the inside of every gig bag I have (Mono Vertigo, Mono Dual and ProTec Contego). Plus, one of the shafts gets loose occasionally. But all-in-all, some cheap mods for a relatively cheap bass that is far better than it should be...This will be great for gigs where I don't want to risk my Wilkins bass...

You are correct about the sustain. Picked one up the other day on a trade and one of the first things I noticed was the long sustain and how quiet it is. Weight isn't an issue (IMHO). Impressed with the fit and finish for a Chinese made Fender. I was planning on flipping it, but decided to keep it instead. The flat black against that maple neck looks great- not flashy, but a straight forward clean color scheme. I tweaked the truss rod a bit and have the strings set pretty low. I haven't had any issues with fret buzz until I'm pretty high up on the neck- but I usually don't crawl up that high anyways.

My thoughts exactly. You could probably even remove the word 'Chinese' and still be accurate. I had't really planned on it being as good as it was, and full expected to return it to Guitar Center, but instead it is sticking around.

Those mods look great Grateful! I'm very impressed with mine. She just handled 2 1/2 weeks in steamy Costa Rica! 5 shows / some rehearsals and a recording session. I only had to tweak the truss tod twice! She even made it through our gig at Oktoberfest where humidity was near 100%. By far the most extreme conditions I've played in. She's now handled 106 degrees in Humboldt, CA and 87 degrees with 100% humidity in CR like a champ.

Every one thought my bass was active. Players and the recording engineer alike were blown away it was passive. Marco Mendoza and his band saw us one night and even he was convinced it was 18 volt! Fender has a lesser known gem with this bass. Fine by me!

yup... I was literally shocked at how great it played and sounded.... and so were all my musician/studio friends ...

Aww man... i thought that was happening. Nobody has been restocking them, but they are still up on the Fender site. I saw the V in sunburst for a SMOKING price online the other day, i just didn't have the coin to snatch it up. Hopefully they may still be there in a couple of weeks.

According to Fender, the body wood is Alder, which is the correct wood for that vintage P-bass sound. Like an original spec Les Paul guitar, the trade off for getting that sound is a very heavy instrument.

I disagree with that. There are lighter and heavier pieces of alder, just like there are lighter and heavier pieces of ash and mahogany, etc.

(there are plenty of alder J basses to, fwiw)

I love mine. I recorded with it this past week at The Compound in Costa Mesa and got nothing but compliments from the engineer. I also used it this past Friday at Reggae on the River in Humboldt, CA. Unfortunately i made a huge mistake by leaving it in the hot (106 degrees kids) sun for over 45 minutes before our set. I pulled it off, but the heat got to the neck. It really needs some work after that one. Here's something Liquid TV put together before we went on this past tour. The bass is kinda heavy in the mix but it's something in a live setting..

I forgot about this club! I got this in December... one of the last MF had. But, I have it for trade in the Classifieds. I love it, it's actually much LIGHTER than my other one (I have no scale, but it's big difference), but it sounds TOO much like my other one. Which isn't a bad thing, it just seems well, redundant. And to be honest, they are discontinued, someone else needs a chance to enjoy this bad boy. That and i've grown really attached to my other one.. it's going back on tour next week! So, that being said I'm pretty specific with my trade options, I have no problem keeping it, LOL. For a passive bass, the full humbucker setting is just pounding.

Played using my Fender Modern Player Jazz satin - full humbucking, neck pickup rolled almost off, bridge pickup full, tone rolled almost off.

Plugged directly into Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 - audio recorded with Ableton Live Lite 9 and synced with video (Canon Rebel T3i) using Windows Live Movie
