Fender Modern Player Series--First Impression Mini-Review

I've been looking for a humbucker bass.
Any opinion on these compared to Stingray type?

I definitely did not walk away with the impression of an EBMM. Beefed up Jazz is, I think, a better approximation of the sound.

They need to put this out in a five, it would be a budget redux of the Roscoe Beck Sig.

Been wanting a humbucker pickup bass with a Jazz-style neck.
Sounds like the Fender Modern Player won't be the ticket to a Stingray tone.
Too bad, because it would be nice to save a couple hundred.

Eh, statistically speaking it's more likely that I played close to the average quality model and my impression was simply due to a comparison to some dislikes on a previously tested bass or some such. This was a first impression review and nothing more; I doubt I just happened to stumble upon the best of the line.

And if I did, I'll notice when I play another one with the intention to purchase. It doesn't make this analysis any less legitimate though.

All the same, I'd personally have put that specific piece on lay away, if I was serious about getting it in a month's time.

I bought one of these about 10 days ago. Beefed-up Jazz is a very good description of the sound. If you want the EBMM sound, go for the SB14 or the Ray 34

I played my first gig with with the MP Jazz on Saturday and I was really pleased with it. It's not too heavy (I've used nothing but a P-Bass Lyte since 1995) and has a nice full sound. The rest of the band really liked it too.

I'm not fussed about where it's made. It felt right and sounded right so I bought it. I'm glad I did.

I thought these were MIM's? They are made over in Korea or something? Not that that is bad or anything, just surprised.

Chinese 100% - the days of the cheap Korean made gear is long gone (hence the movement of Cor-Tek etc to Indonesia and China) if the pricepoint of Skylines couldnt support manufacture there it is unlikely that a $450 instrument would....

It's about time Fender started making some non-Squier instruments in the East. They really needed something to compete in that $400 - $500 range especially when you look at what other brands are offering at that price point (lots of bang for the $) - the MIMs have seemed overpriced for a while.

I think it's also worth pointing out that I don't have any extra love for fender in particular. I've still to this day never owned a bass with "Fender" on the headstock

I revisited another bass of this model today and left with the exact same impression. Crazy good tone, great feel, great construction, stupidly good value.

Just got one of these myself. Really nice. Great neck, easy on the hands. Still feeling out the electronics...but to me it kind of sounds like a BIG FAT P BAss...and then I can change it up to get a nice jazz sound as well. My first bass from China but everything looks and sounds great.
