I've been interested in these ever since I learned that Brian Burton (aka Dangermouse) uses one in Broken Bells and the Black Keys use one (probably because Dangermouse likes them and he produces the Keys). Love the sound he gets.

Lately I been putting up posts about various basses I nned to know about.Soon I will be in the market for one and I wanna make sure I know as much about them as possible before I play them.I love precision bass,i love jazz bass,but i'm not to familiar with the mustang.However I am interested about them and the way the feel/sound.Anyone tell me a little about them and the sound and short scale?

I really like that new Pawnshop Mustang. Don't like the shell guard much, though. Sunburst/black guard would look great!

Seriously, those pants are what we call in Mass. "Wicked Pissah". The bass is a beauty too.

I love the original Mustang Basses. (the reissues have a different neck width at the body)....

Are the new ones wider, or narrower?

I have a white Japanese Fender Mustang Bass. It looks and sounds pretty good when the girls in my band play it, and it matches with my Fender Mustang. I think strung with the right strings (La Bella 760FL-S, especially made for Mustang) and fitted with the right pickup (Aero in mine), it really comes alive. Also, some Mustang Basses are much heavier than they need to be. Mine's a bit under 8 pounds and that's a good weight, although I also have light tuners to help with the neck dive which is to be expected. Most short scale Fenders I've handled are way heavier than they need to be, for some weird reason.

Stock, I thought my MIJ Mustang Bass was pretty good, but right now, it's a bass whose one tone fits in just about any song. Versatility is overrated in my mind when it comes to bass tone because I favor just having a bass sound that works for everything. You know, sort of like a Precision Bass. But I think the Aero pickup and short scale give it a slightly deeper tone than your average Precision Bass. The highs are muted but very pleasing, responding well to EQ adjustments. I don't really care for some of the vintage Mustang Basses I've played, especially the ones from the 70s.

I worry about some of the hot-rodded versions of it that use a full sized humbucker instead of a split coil. A short scale Fender is already a pretty deep sounding instrument. I don't think it needs any more lows.

I'm not going to discount everyone else's experiences, but in mine, I had no problem fitting a modern Bronco Bass neck on a vintage American short scale body.

I don't know how compatible a modern Squier Bronco Bass is with a Japanese Mustang Bass, however.

The new ones are wider. I tried to put a 66 neck on a reissue body, and there was nearly a half inch of extra space in the neck pocket. :-/ I ended up just buying the 66 body that went with the neck originally so things would fit correctly.
