I played one at a GC and was surprised at how BIG it sounded given its scale length . The overall dimensions were comfy but since I like to anchor my thumb, I felt it was a little hard to find
a good position for fingerstyle.

The main reason I dont like this bass is because of small P style pickups. I hate Single Ps enough as it is but now they were shrank and even harder to rest my thumb on. Kinda silly reason.

I had the same comment when I picked up one for my son (a reforming guitarist). I had owned a Musicmaster a few years back (with an upgrade pu - never should have let it go). Anyway, the feel of the small P pu is a little different, but I go t used to that. The MIJ reissues are beautifully built and finished. I think the mini P pickups sound better than the American ones on the oldies. I finally broke down and bought a RI Mustang and love it. It's my main backup (Alembic short scale comes first) and gets a lot of play. Cool bass. Great sound. Punchier than long scales, but very solid - good sustain. :bassist:

It's my favourite bass. It's a dream to play, and you get great tone. got some d'addario chromes (medium gauge) on it. I don't know if I can go back to a long scale again, after playing this thing.

It interesting. Ron Blair is a long time Jazz player and from what I've seen, still plays a 66 jazz, but during the R&R HOF induction of TP & THB's he was playing a mustang.

I rest my thumb on the pickup. and just jamming, never minded how it felt,

but recording with it yesterday, being more focused, I thought it was kind of small and uncomfortable, and I can feel the mounting screw, almost distracting.

Got me thinking of adding a thumb rest.

I do love the Bass and how it sounds. and being a relative Bass-newbie, I have trouble spanning those wider frets on some riffs with my 34".

I would love to have this as well as the competition orange model to complete my collection. I have also seen what was called a "competition purple model, but it could of been a yellowed blue one.

i played one in a GC a few months ago... totally loved it, probably my favorite bass that i've played in a guitar center.. if only i had the money for one i'd buy it..

on another note: why are they called competition mustangs? what competition was this? and who won it?

which is polarizing .some people love them
some don't
