I know they are not the same; the JMJ pickup measures around 10.5K ohms resistance, vs the Custom Shop Mustang pickup at 9.5K. Overwound?
I'm eyeballing these as I've been saving $ and getting a couple gigs, and might be ready to throw a little more dough at the pizza oven.
Do y'all have Mustangs with through-body string mounting? Mine's strictly bridge-mounted, so it's something to consider re: string length, taper, etc. That said, the factory strings Fender put on it are not tapered after the nut and wind on fine...though various string types respond differently to tight winding when not tapered. I just don't know, and I'd hate to get a nice set of long scale strings, cut 'em to length, and find out they unravel when tightened around the post.
(update: still love the bass)
Mine is also the Player Series Mustang - PJ - top load bridge. No problems putting the pressurewounds on. To me, they are somewhere in between flats and rounds. Brighter than flats, but easier on the fingers than rounds.
The mustang thread has been too quiet. Here’s a recent (work-in-progress) cover that my kids are working on from a local band — of course with mustang content. The bassist is settling in nicely with his mustang. Further proof that mustangs work for on-the-small-side 10 year olds as well as adults.

What is the big different in sound between "Fender Mustang JMJ RoadWorn Bass" and "Fender Vintera 60s Mustang Bass"?
JMJ has the "Custom Seymour Duncan® Split Single-Coil Mustang Bass®"
60s has "Vintage-Style '60s Split Single-Coil Mustang Bass®"
Both have alder body, but the 60s Pau Ferro neck and JMJ Rosewood. Same 1.625" (41.3 mm) nut width which is good.
I love the Fender P Sound (Custom 63 pickup) and want a extra bass, smaller and lighter (back and neck problem) with the P-sound, deep bass, finger style, for blues.

I don't have experience hearing the pickups side-by-side with the same amp. But other relevant differences include neck radius / shape and frets.
- JMJ: 9.5" radius, C shape, medium jumbo frets
- Vintera: 7.25" radius, mid-60s C shape, 60s style frets
Yes, thats true. Thanks. When I tried them for five minutes I like the 60s but both was good. The JMJ with flats and 60s with rounds, but I like flats best so thats will be the first to replace if buying one. Playing them without a amp so hard to say..
Anyone know what they weigh?

I hear you. It’s probably a bit closer to 8 without the strap. I’ve read somewhere that the JMJs range from about 8-8.5, so likely both about the same but there’s always some variation. Some stores will go out of their way to weigh them for you if you’d like.
A friend of mine has a P bass that is 11+ lbs, but maybe that’s on the higher side?
Ok, I will hear if they have a lighter than that. My P is 8,6lbs. Oh, 11 must be and old Fender from the seventies.

In my experience flats will unravel if you cut them before the silk, and will break if you bend them too sharply, such as being part of the wrap around a tuner post, or even over the bridge saddle on through-body bridges where you have to bring the saddle close to the route for intonation (primarily the E.) Most rounds will work fine regardless of where you cut or bend them. Half-rounds are a good choice for through-body if you can find them in medium scale. The only ones I’ve seen are D’Addario.
I put the Nordy pups on my Performer and they sound much better than stock. They didn’t send me covers, though, which is fine. Regardless, it has the presence of any P that I own.
My JMJ is 7.4 lbs and the pickup has a higher output IME than the Vintera or Player Mustangs I tried. Have not played the USA Performer and definitely wanted a 9.5 radius as it seems harder to get lower action with any 7.25 radius bass I've ever played. LOVE the feel of the neck profile on my JMJ and you can see the headstock itself has more mass than many of the other Mustangs. All part of the well thought out design collaboration of Justin and Fender.
Mine’s a string-through MIJ. I just use regular 34" scale D’Addarrios, 100s — works fine
