It is not so much the 3 hole plate as it is the scalloped top of the control plate in the Jagstang style. It cannot fit to the cut out on a Mustang PJ pickguard. And,,,,, Jagstang pickguards don't come with Precision or split coil pickup cutouts. So it ends up as a Rock and a Hard Place situation. Either the pickguard cannot fit to the control plate or the control plate cannot fit to the pickguard. So even today the Fender Mustang PJ uses the 2017 pickguard design. Where the idea of this scalloped top control plate came from I have no idea. Finding the 4 hole plate was a stumble. The company that made it has agreed to make a custom 4 hole plate if I can provide a template of the original 2017 3 hole plate. To their dismay I just so happen to have a measured diagram which I have sent.
Also a friend is a metal smith and is modifying the pictured control plate s we speak.

Might I ask a comment question?
I bet you found plenty of the scalloped "Jagstang" style control plates? I don't feel so alone anymore.
Faction Guitars is where I found the 4 hole plate. Unfortunately it was in the wrong top shape.
Have you found any information as to why the original shape is no longer available, even from Fender? All of my inquiries have gone unanswered.

@Bobhmcs no idea. Found one in Europe but upon further review saw it was for a Jag. Called Fender today to confirm the jazz pickup on my Mexican PJ is neck sized (I measured 3x but still didn't trust myself) and they might have more info on PJ parts, will call tomorrow.

Well, Hipshot is not doing any promos or sales for Black Friday, and Oscar actually gave me a lot of poopie for even asking lol

But it turns out I can try to score a set of HB10 nickel cloverleaf tuners somewhere since they're a lot more common than the lollipops, and then I can order just the lollipop keys from Hipshot for cheap and install them on the machine with some standard tools. I might only save $20-30 but that's $ I could use during the holiday season.

So, I'm now in the market for any nickel HB10s that might be in the wild heh

So would this idea apply to all of their bass tuner models ?

I did not know that we can order the key heads a la carte. - How cheap, and can this be done thru their website ?

And I take it that we could only do those swaps on the USA Hipshots, because the procedure would be like reversing the side of the headstock for those ?

My personal choice would be the HB7 with Y-shaped key heads though.

In his defense, Oscar has been very helpful in the past on a variety of hardware and helped me with some bridge saddles and plates to get parts made for a custom build at a very reasonable cost. Sometimes they can only do so much and know they are behind on production schedules after being closed for a good while earlier on in the pandemic. On the other hand, I'm selling the HB7 Lollipop tuners that came with my JMJ Mustang only because I had Gotoh Resolites that I loved from an old bass that I'd sold so I put those on there.

Yeah likewise, he's who set me up with the spare hardware for my Kickass bridge, and I'm sure he's had people try to haggle and whatnot. Gotta maintain boundaries when you're in a small biz operation!

The price wasn't much per key, and I think they want to take orders manually to keep too many from just being out in the wild. Just a guess, and makes sense to me. Idunno how interchangeable they are, but most of the HBx tuners look like they're about the same size (HB2 kinda looks different though).

And actually, that interchangeability makes me like them even more. These are pretty much a luxury item for me, and I've got some very non-luxury expenses to handle first... but I might just do a beans & rice diet for a few weeks and plunk down a direct order after all

I replaced the J in mine with a bridge sized pickup. Are you sure it’s neck sized? I didn’t measure mine, I just compared the two J pickups I got in a used set of Aguilars and the larger one matched so I went with that.

@PotsdamBass8 Between my call to Fender and measuring 4x, yeah, the J pickup on my Mexican Mustang PJ is a Neck as it's a 3.6" vs 3.735" for a bridge size. That's cool that you were able to make the more wound/packed bridge pickup work... maybe some pickups and pickguards are more 'universally' sized as the J pickups are the same width and the screw holes are only .08" difference despite the length difference. mine might be shell pink by sunday...

friends don't let friends tort....

you may need to drill some holes, but most any bridge will fit.

Hi The Badass is a direct drop in although I would highly recommend the Fender HiMass Bass Bridge which is their version of the Badass, about 1/4 of the price, just as good and indeed a direct drop in with no mods required!

It could be easy to overpower the finish with the wrong guard, so if you can, do a bit of color comparison. Idunno if there's an tools out there to test combos....

The Leo Quan Badass bass bridge is made for the 5-hole Fender layout, as is the Hipshot KickAss. I went KickAss for the extra screws and inserts, but Fender's "Badass-style" bridge is also very solid from what I've seen.

Congrats on a purdy new shell pink!
