I know that most Player basses - at least Precisions - come with alnico pickups, I believe that it was ceramic before. Whether Mustangs are the same, I don't know, but I'd imagine they'd be consistent across the line? But who knows.

I have seen the original PJs on product pages, listed as having 'vintage' sounding pickups, while Player PJs have 'proprietary' pups. Again, whether there's a difference there or it's just Fender blurb, who knows.

Maybe someone who's swapped pickups in them could confirm what type the originals were?

Just picked this Mustang up yesterday. It’s a 2004-2005 U serial number CIJ in Old Candy Apple Red with the competition stripe and vintage pearloid pickguard. I just finished stringing it with some LaBella Flats. It looks and sounds amazing!

Can I get a number?

Fender offers 3 Mustang Player basses - mustang bass | Sweetwater Invalid Link Removed Sienna Sunburst, Invalid Link Removed Firemist Gold, and Aged Natural: Invalid Link Removed

CME has versions that are exclusive to that store: mustang bass

I thought Sweetwater did too, but I just checked their site and I see only P/J Mustangs ($574.99) and Player Mustangs ($649.99)

The only way to tell them apart for sure is to make a spreadsheet of the color variations, fretboard types and so on. I have screenshots of most of them, but don't have them organized yet.
I have both P/J and Player versions, and the comment about the pickups sounding different probably came from me.
I had trouble with the switches on both P/J's I had. No trouble yet with the Invalid Link Removed Sienna Sunburst Player I have. I'm very happy with it.

The shell pink Mustang PJ was a big hit at Northside Tavern last night.

Northside Tavern is one of maybe two true blues clubs in Atlanta proper, the other being Blind Willy's. Beverly "Guitar" Watkins' son, one godlike monster of a bassist, Mr. Stanley Watkins, holds down bass duties with Lola, the godmother of the weekly open mic.

After I got schooled thoroughly by him and another funk beast and him again, he got off stage and pointed at me, so I got on to assist with a couple of acts.

I usually get longwinded with these so will just say, I took notes and lessons from Mr. Watkins laying a whole planet's worth of deep groove, but am also not ashamed of how I sounded in such venerable company. And the shell pink finish was a huge charmer. That bass is kinda my favorite now for things 4-string-bass-related.

I have no idea why some of these are sideways, but I figured a few updated shots of my mustang with the new bridge installed. Intonation is very close, so I (a dummy) am kind of surprised I did so good, haha. She's got some battle wounds from a previous owner, but I'm prepared to give her her forever home. <3

Looks good!!

If you find you can't get the E string quite where it needs to go because the screws & springs are too long, Hipshot'll take care of you with some baby screws. I don't think they have baby springs, but if they get enough requests, maybe one day they'll just include extra short parts in every kit. I love my KickAss!
