I guess I got lucky with my tuners. My E string works fine. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money maybe you could swap two of your tuners around to see if it makes a difference or only buy one and replace the E. Otherwise you would have to go with a different set.

Hey all, I can post a pic tomorrow but over the summer I was able to get my hands on a limited bright orange Mexican pj mustang and im looking to upgrade it, hate to start the debate but whats the best pj set? I know I need a new switch as well but im kind of between the geezer butlers (which will require much more work) seymour duncan quarter pounders and dimazzio. Ive heard so many mixed reviews of the duncans..

I only have experience with the Geezer Butlers (in an Ibanez Mikro), but give that PJ set a thumbs up.

It’s just in there for looks and to fill the hole. I liked the VVT better because I could blend the 2 pickups which you can’t do with the 3 way switch. I’ll have to pick another volume pot up and find a wiring diagram to do that. I’m happy with the stock tuners on this bass. They seem really solid and hold tune well. Almost where I want it!

I must learn more about the Fender Ultra J pickup.

Yes, there are other hum cancelling J pickups available, but that one is new to me.

Also, gotta ask, please, what are the models of your Ampeg cabs and head ?

I'm not sure that I recognize them.

@Bassndrums73 I dropped a Kickass onto my PJ, and it only actually reached proper setup & intonation after I both reverse-shimmed my neck and asked Hipshot to send me shorter screws for the saddles. But I also lacked the testicular fortitude to re-drill (and it was so close, I'd have worried that I couldn't position the new holes in a safe place and also still get intonation on the other end of things), and shimming just took sanding the hell out of a blank, so strictly non-destructive mods. You're a far more capable craft-modder than I, I'm not ashamed to admit!

Also, that's a sweet rig behind that sweet bass.

@Jemi9OD If you wanna go the Hipshot route, the HB10 model is a direct drop-in replacement for tuners. In contrast, the Ultralites will need a drilling and I think don't cover the old holes, so that's an aesthetic tradeoff (that many people have happily made). My stock tuners have also been pretty okay, but kinda need to be tuned up from below to be reliable, like violin/viola/cello pegs. And easy to miss the mark, too. I want HB10s myself :bassist:

It really depends on what you want different from the stock pickups. The stock pickups aren’t BAD, but some people want something different. For example, if you find that the stock pickups are too heavy in the lows and want more mids, the EMG would be great and the Duncan not great. The Dimarzios have strong low mids, and a lot of output, which could be good or bad depending on what you want.

My biggest issue is the j pickup is super quiet and anemic. Im honestly very new to the whole modding idea

Yeah, that’s a big issue with PJ basses. If you’re doing mods yourself, start with a blend knob or two volumes so you can get a little different ratio than the switch.

The PJ setups I’ve used that had a good strong J that can blend with the P and not just change the sound through the filtering effect were all super powerful. Nordstrand J blade, Yamaha BB424X blade pickup, and G&L SB-2 with its powerful MFD pickup. It doesn’t mean the other setups weren’t still good sounding, but a standard style J will mostly just make it sound like a P with filtering.

FYI I currently have an Aguilar PJ set in mine, and I really like it.

'Scuse my ignorance, but what's OW Mustang?
Those used PJ Mustang prices at GC are ridiculous, especially considering what they wanted to give me for mine in trade in. $450 Range is cool, but $550 and up is near and above new prices.
BTW, how do you tell the player series from previous version?

I think they went from Rosewood fretboards to Pau Ferro on the players.

I recently read on this forum that they also changed the pickups, but that's the only post where I've read that. I can't verify it.

From what I know, they changed the finish options, the name and the price. Perhaps they were selling better than they thought they would? Who knows. Without some insight from a reliable source, a Fender rep perhaps, there's no way to really know, but plenty of speculation.
